Get Ready for a Wet, Wild Winter in 2012!

For the last several months, many of you have been emailing us, leaving comments on our articles, and asking us on our Facebook page, “What’s in store for the coming winter?” Not, at long last, the wait is over! The 2012 Farmers’ Almanac is on shelves, and our much-awaited long-range forecast for the coming year is no longer a secret. Last year, the Farmers’ Almanac predicted that the winter would exhibit a split personality, with harsh conditions for the eastern half of the U.S., and milder weather to the west. That prediction came through, as residents of the Northeast and Great Lakes regions, especially, got pounded with many heavy storms throughout the season.

So what’s in store for the coming winter?

(The following overview is for the United States. To read our predictions for Canada, click here).

For the winter of 2011–12, the Farmers’ Almanac is forecasting “clime and punishment,” a season of unusually cold and stormy weather. For some parts of the country, that means a frigid climate; while for others, it will mean lots of rain and snow.

The upcoming winter looks to be cold to very cold for the Northern Plains, parts of the Northern Rockies, and the western Great Lakes. In contrast, above-normal temperatures are expected across most of the southern and eastern U.S. Near-normal temperatures are expected in the Midwest and Far West, and in southern
Florida.

A very active storm track will bring much heavier-than-normal precipitation from the Southern Plains through Tennessee into Ohio, the Great Lakes, and the Northeast. Because of above normal temperatures, much of the precipitation will likely be rain or mixed precipitation, although, during February, some potent East Coast storms could leave heavy snow, albeit of a wet and slushy consistency.

An active Pacific Storm track will guide storm systems into the Pacific Northwest, giving it a wetter-than-normal winter.

Drier-than-normal weather will occur in the Southwest and Southeast corners of the nation.

The forecast for the South was very much correct. The most I saw (Memphis, TN) was one inch and that was in NOVEMBER! After that, all we saw were flurries a few times with above average temperatures. I guess it had to happen after the past colder and snowier winters we had. Hope we get more snow next winter!

In Pennsylvania (19473) for June 2nd 2012…..what kind of weather can we expect for a huge outdoor party I planned. thanks!

Melissa,
We always release the next year’s forecast at the end of August, and we review the prior year shortly before that.

4 Melissa { 05.15.12 at 12:50 am }

Itl be winter again before we know it. When will the 2012-13 winter forecast be published? and our 2012 winter in review? Time really flies because next winter isnt too far behind! Im going to enjoy my summer before i worry about winter though. When things wind down by fall ill start preparing for the cold blast. Hopefully its snowier and colder though

I live in West Virginia and i want to know why so many weird things are happening with the weather? after February was over winter has just left so quickly. Now they’re saying we could have heavy wet snow tomorrow night into monday! its almost MAY, our flowers and everything are weeks ahead of schedule! march was so warm and this has gotten me concerned. Are there going to be unusually mild conditions running into December 2012? “end of the world” if there is then ill believe it! unusual things are goin on and i wanna know whats going on!

11 brandy h. { 04.21.12 at 11:20 am }

I live near boston and ive been paying close attention to the farmers almanac this past winter. The snowstorm that was predicted in mid february didnt come up to the new england coast but it did hit somewhere i think. they got like a foot of snow. Was that the same storm that was predicted? i think it was penn. or va that got ravaged with a big snowstorm that closed airports, cities, roads, schools etc.. i rememeber watching it on the weather channel. it was sunny and nice up here that day but super cold down there

12 Jaime McLeod { 04.16.12 at 8:38 am }

Hi Ty,
We won’t be releasing our 2013 forecast until late August.

13 Ty { 04.15.12 at 12:42 pm }

What is 2012-2013 winter looking like for AR?

14 Wanda { 04.15.12 at 12:26 pm }

This spring has been very warm here in the southeast. It seems like spring is giving way to a hot summer. We need rain badly here in North Carolina and hopefully well get some rain. it would help the wildfires all over the place! April showers? not so much. Its too dry and hot too early! 80 degrees right now. I want spring for a change! Are there any brief cool downs anytime soon?

15 Paul Reape ( WX2PJR) { 04.10.12 at 10:54 am }

Well, that forecast was a bust… The complete opposite happened here in NNY.

16 Nick { 04.09.12 at 12:17 pm }

If the above-mentioned article isn’t proof that weather forecasting is simply taking a somewhat educated guess at best, I don’t know what is. We just had our warmest first quarter of the year since the beginning of record-keeping in the contiguous states, while this winter was predicted to be “a season of unusually cold and stormy weather”. I wouldn’t waste my time asking what the weather will be like in August… mother nature herself doesn’t even know.

17 Josh { 04.03.12 at 8:56 pm }

Only had 26 inches of snow this winter season in Detroit. It was our mildest, most open winter in years (though RICK, who stated we had less than a foot total all season as of Feb 20th, was extremely exaggerating). We were due for a mild winter after our very snowy winters in recent years. Maybe this was just a balancing out since we had nearly 70 inches of snow in 2010-11. Hoping for a snowy 2012-13!

18 Gwen { 04.01.12 at 10:10 pm }

I was looking at the long range weather forecast and I was glancing at May and cool and chilly conditions were mentioned alot. Are they likely to be short lived or will the below average temps last the whole month? We are going to NC from the 14th-27th for my anniversary and we prefer summer like warmth at that time of year. Will that be answered in the summer outlook or is it just a wait and see game? Not a 2009 pretty please! We wont be forgettin’ that miserable “summer”

19 Jaime McLeod { 03.27.12 at 10:20 am }

Aaron, Look for the summer outlook on our homepage in mid-April.

20 Jaime McLeod { 03.27.12 at 10:19 am }

Ashley,
You can see the forecast for that date here: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/long-range-weather-forecast/

21 Jaime McLeod { 03.27.12 at 10:13 am }

Louise, We won’t be releasing our 2013 forecast until late August. You can see what we say through December if you pick up a copy of the 2012 Farmers’ Almanac. There’s a digital edition that is just the weather for only $3.99.

22 Kassie { 03.26.12 at 11:29 pm }

Hi everyone I am planning on having our wedding on October 6, 2012 in Santa Ynez California. What kind of weather should we expect? Thank you

23 Louise21 { 03.26.12 at 2:29 am }

I am on the East Coast…..we had the mildest winter here…as a matter of fact nearly no winter except for snow in October and a major storm in January…that’s it!! Are we gonna have a winter this year 2012-2013?

24 Ashley W { 03.24.12 at 10:07 am }

I am gettieng married May 19, 2012 in Monticello, WI just wondering about rain…. what are the chanced it is going to rain?

25 Aaron { 03.23.12 at 7:52 pm }

I was just wondering when the summer outlook be released? Hopefully soon because im itching to know what this summer has in store. Crossing my fingers for a good hot summer

26 JEANENE { 03.23.12 at 7:42 am }

Almanac says cold, flurries for Great Lakes Mar. 20-Mar. 23?, we have had record temps above normal(80′s) and no snow……………this is very interesting. Now what?

27 Regina { 03.20.12 at 7:19 pm }

This winter just wasent right! We just keep shattering record temps! This was our fourth warmest winter on record! I am so worried because of it. What if we never get to see a cold or normal winter again? Id hate to blame it on global warming because last winter was very cold but this is still really strange. Lack of snow was just about everywhere in the east! Im never going to wish for a warm winter like this. Will next winter be anything like this one? No winter, i can only hope we get summer this year

28 Adrian Burridge { 03.19.12 at 11:18 pm }

First day of spring in 2012. If you use the weather to trade commodities I would love to hear from you. CanadianInvestors.com has been commenting on commodities since December 1999.

29 priscilla Sparkman { 03.19.12 at 8:05 pm }

Does anyone know.what it said.for Detroit Michigan?

30 Karen { 03.19.12 at 5:53 pm }

I live in northern North Carolina and I think weve done great this winter. It hasent gotten terribly cold and I got to save on my heating bill. Despite the one snow we got back in February we havent had much of a winter. It would be nice if summer would stay cooler but not another 2009! Do you think I will get to save on my air bill this summer too?

31 Ray { 03.19.12 at 11:00 am }

Funny to see people so interested in the predictions for Winter 2012, when the Winter 2011 predictions were so completely, 100% wrong.

32 Jaime McLeod { 03.19.12 at 9:16 am }

Holly, We’ll be revealing our summer outlook in just a few weeks. In the meantime, you can look at our forecasts for the next four months here: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/long-range-weather-forecast/

33 Holly { 03.16.12 at 9:56 pm }

We got hammered with snow here in New England during the winter 2010/2011…this year was the polar opposite with below average snow fall. This is concerning. What is in store for this area during summer 2012 and winter 2012/2013?

34 Jaime McLeod { 03.15.12 at 10:48 am }

Sorry Brenda,
We’re calling for it to be pretty hot this summer, and spring will probably be a precursor to that. You should see a few cooler days, here and there, though.

35 Brenda { 03.14.12 at 3:11 pm }

Is it ever going to cool down? March and April are the only months of the year I get to enjoy nice comfy temps in the 60s and 70 but here it is in the 80s! Im not ready for all of this yet. Does the farmers almanac see any cool downs? I have the air conditioner on right now in March! Virginia dont see 80 degree days until like May. I wanna enjoy some spring weather. Not summer lol thank you!

36 Stella G. { 03.12.12 at 3:53 pm }

Does the writer of this article have an excuse as to how completely wrong they were? We have barely had a winter this year in Chicago Very few cold days, almost no snow, and this week (mid-March) it is going to hit eighty degrees. Anxious to hear how they could have been so off in all respects of this forecast.

37 Jaime McLeod { 03.12.12 at 2:02 pm }

parcrat1963, You can find your average last frost date here: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/weather/2007/02/14/average-frost-dates/

Im in salem missouri and was wondering what the predictions are for the last frost and when its safe to start planting our garden

39 Jaime McLeod { 03.09.12 at 4:16 pm }

Carolyn,
You can find your average local frost dates here: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/weather/2007/02/14/average-frost-dates/

40 CAROLYN { 03.09.12 at 2:36 pm }

I LIVE IN CENTRAL OREGON IN THE TOWN OF SPRAY I WOULD LIKE TOKNOW THE LAST FROST DATE FOR OUR AREA

41 Christopher Burris { 03.04.12 at 8:00 am }

Lools like the lack of snow in DC was expected. A lot of hot air from the south and plains has probably reduced the likelihood and energy for snowy conditions.

42 daryle { 03.01.12 at 12:20 pm }

What does MD have to look forward to this summer since our winter was in the high 50,s to the mid 60,s ?

43 daryle { 03.01.12 at 12:17 pm }

I live in Baltimore well close enough and it is 63 degree,s today and it,s been in that range for the past several months round about if this winter has been this warm where tree,s are budding and plants are blooming what does summer have in store for us ?

44 Aaron { 02.29.12 at 11:53 pm }

So far little rain, scattered showers, no snow here in shingle springs, just a little rain. About 1 inch so far

45 Jaime McLeod { 02.29.12 at 10:38 am }

tornadojustin, We’ll be releasing our Spring Outlook next week. Watch our homepage.

courtneywright,
You can find that information here: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/long-range-weather-forecast/

49 Jaime McLeod { 02.28.12 at 9:30 am }

Denise, We’re calling for “some snow Christmas” in much of the Mid-Atlantic region, so it’s possible.

50 Denise { 02.27.12 at 8:58 pm }

We all know this winter has been miserable for all of us winter snow lovers, especially December when it was warm everyday including Christmas. Is there any way i could get the forecast for Christmas 2012 in Lynchburg, VA? Do you think i will get to see a white christmas?

51 courtneywright { 02.27.12 at 1:36 pm }

Addition to previous comment: I am getting married on April 27th, 2012 near St. Louis, MO. I forgot to say where I’m at on the last one.

52 courtneywright { 02.27.12 at 1:34 pm }

I am getting married on April 27th, 2012. Planning for an outdoor wedding? What are the chances of rain/storms?

53 Jaime McLeod { 02.27.12 at 11:33 am }

Megan,
You can find our forecast for that date here: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/long-range-weather-forecast/

Just click on your area of the map.

54 Jeb { 02.26.12 at 11:22 pm }

following all i can gather, and this being an end to la-nina and straight into el-nino, its going to be really hot, and really dry this summer(2012) in the majority of the US. will be a tough year for agriculture..

55 Megan { 02.26.12 at 1:46 pm }

I’m getting married on June 16th in Pensacola, FL. What’s the weather prediction? Any information would be helpful.

56 Diane { 02.24.12 at 3:54 pm }

I’m going to the beach in late June to early July. Do you know whats coming our way somewhere during that time frame in North Carolina? I dont want it very rainy like the last time we went. Will it be hot this summer for us?

57 Jaime McLeod { 02.24.12 at 10:07 am }

Julia, We’re calling for snow that day, but probably nothing too severe. Congratulations! Just think of it as glitter.

58 Beth { 02.23.12 at 11:05 pm }

It seems like this has been one of the driest winters I can remember in all my 50 years. Someone said that we’re suppose to get a really bad storm at the end of February and after that it’ll be dry and stay dry. I know 2012 is suppose to be a strange year but it seems like the wet winter forecast isn’t gonna happen unless it happens soon. So Wet? Dry? End of February 2012? Just wondering if it’s changed.

59 Tanor Faux { 02.23.12 at 5:31 pm }

This winter is very disappointing to me. Pennsylvania, especially east of the Appalachia, need that snow now more than ever if we’re going to have a good spring and summer. If we don’t we can see some really bad issues with the growth of crops, the river levels of both groundwater springs, mountain springs and other water areas.

Places like in Carbon County, thrive on the snow, because the snowmelt off the mountains fills the groundwater and rivers. WIth a disappointing winter, we’re not getting enough snow to do so. We need a really good snowstorm to fix the snow drought. Please Mother Nature, bring down the snow! Because, I will get Cave Johnson to invent a Weather Control Device! out of a watermelon.

60 Julia { 02.23.12 at 3:30 pm }

Hello,
I’m planning an outdoor wedding in VT for 12/21/12. Is there any chance I could please get the prediction for just that day? I would think it’s gonna be cold, but if next winter’s anything like this one, I’ll probably be sweating in a warm dress.
Thank you!

61 Barb Andrews { 02.21.12 at 12:37 pm }

What kind of summer are we going to have in wisconsin?

62 Beth { 02.21.12 at 3:21 am }

What about Lexington,Ky? Are going to have very much snow this winter. It has been warmer than usual for February not that I’m complaining.

63 Sandra J Lind { 02.20.12 at 9:22 pm }

I live in Southeastern Vermont, although last years winter was incredibly snowey, this winter has been very mild, one good snow of over 4inches so far….then a few flurries which never amounted to much. Temps dropped to the single digits a few times, sometimes in the teens but now they are heading upward….more high 20s and 30s for February. But, I am still waiting for that last big hurrah Mom Nature always sends at the last minute….ya know…the one that drops almost 6 inches around Easter time?

64 RICK { 02.20.12 at 12:42 pm }

Here in the Metro Detroit area, as of today 2-20-12, WE HAVEN’T HAD ANY real “winter”! So far less than a foot of snow-TOTAL- and I’ve only started my snow blower ONCE, and didn’t really have to THAT time, ’cause it melted off almost immediately over the next 3 days!!!! GLOBAL WARMING-GOTTA LOVE IT!!! Hey, I don’t own ocean-front property, a ski lodge or a snowmobile dealership, so Yeaaaaaaah, Baby! SCREW WINTER!!!!

65 yoverizon { 02.19.12 at 12:47 pm }

Winter is here! snowin big time in virginia. snow all day and night! up to 5 inches.. i can look out the window and see an inch of snow on the ground already.

66 Adam Weber { 02.19.12 at 11:41 am }

Why are we have any really cold temperature? In Indiana the average temperature was the high 50′s and low 20 and 30′s. Is that normal for us please answer back if you can

67 Andrew L { 02.18.12 at 6:49 pm }

This forecast has been real accurate so far for North Dakota ………….

68 Adrianne { 02.16.12 at 7:51 pm }

I think the almanac def got it wrong this winter. I live in southern tiers in NY and this has been the mildest winter I have ever seen! Barely any snow. The most we got was maybe 2″. I love it. It was 63 a couple weeks ago and in the upper 30s to mid 40s everyday!

69 Sherille { 02.15.12 at 10:18 am }

Will Central Arkansas, Hot Springs, see any significant snow this year, or are we left out again??? Last year was ok, the snow didn’t last long, I would love for it to stick around longer!!

70 Alana Cicchi { 02.15.12 at 1:50 am }

I live in the city in MN, and it predicted us having a ton of snow and very cold weather. But this has been one of the mildest warmest, wonters in years. Weve had 15 inches of snow at best all wonter thus far, average is twice that and last year we had 61 inches! This was totally wrong and off for our entire state

71 Couch { 02.13.12 at 10:07 am }

Wow, missed this one huh, it is February 13th, I live in North Dakota……we have had just a few inches of snow and no rain since July…..last year at this time we had a hundred inches on the ground….was still melting in June….today, dry as a popcorn fart….

72 Jaime McLeod { 02.13.12 at 9:30 am }

Kyle,
We won’t be revealing that forecast until late August.

73 Shanda { 02.11.12 at 2:24 pm }

How will weather be in Houston/Galveston March 15th-18th of 2012

74 Kyle { 02.11.12 at 1:41 am }

What will 2012-13 winter be like in Sacramento California?

75 Heidi { 02.10.12 at 6:53 pm }

Im in Michigan it’s been a very unusual winter here. We have a big amount of snow from today but ehat does Feb/March look like?

76 yoverizon { 02.10.12 at 5:45 pm }

I havent seen any snow this winter at all. I give up! In my years of living i havent seen a year without snow! This will be my first one.

77 Brennon { 02.10.12 at 1:54 pm }

Whats the witer look like for nw Arkansas in 2012

78 ruth { 02.08.12 at 8:35 pm }

by the way, i mean in PA,

79 ruth { 02.08.12 at 8:34 pm }

dang, we are saving our fire wood for a snow storm, are we ever going to get one. just had a dustying today, so we brunned some of our wood, but waiting for that big snow storm, or should we just go ahead and brun it?

80 winterwhereareyouu { 02.08.12 at 8:30 am }

summer, fall,spring… what’s missing.. oh yea.. WINTER. I am in upstate New York and we have virtually nothing here for snow. I can look out my back window and see ‘grass’… everyone complaining no snow to ride snow machines…. I think Mr. Almanac might have gotten this one wrong for some folks.

81 Chad { 02.07.12 at 11:56 am }

Thankfully, this was inaccurate this year. We’ve not had more than a dusting here in Central Indiana this year and it’s February 7th. Winter is almost over and it’s stayed reasonably warm. Last year we had snow on the ground for the majority of the winter. This time last year it was in the 20′s 30′s. This week? We seen a 56 degree day and several others that were very warm. If Indiana weather would just stay like this each winter I’d be set!

82 Casey bagley { 02.06.12 at 6:52 pm }

It is freezing here in arizona in the beebin morning

83 Jaime McLeod { 02.06.12 at 11:59 am }

Ashley, On October 12, we call for “Fair” weather. Congratulations!

84 Lisa { 02.06.12 at 11:36 am }

You were right about the dry, mild SE. Down in Florida we are staying at 70-80s and crispy dry with wildfires.

85 Theresa { 02.06.12 at 3:22 am }

I live in eastern missouri and this has been a very unusual warm winter. so much for the blizzard like conditions that were expected. guess that means we are probably in for a very hot and humid summer. i can’t believe how terribly wrong you were about the predictions for this winter.

86 Tashia { 02.05.12 at 2:51 pm }

This is completely wrong for Maine. We are getting an awesome winter compared to what we have gotten over the years….with little to no snow and sooooooooo far maybe 3 storms where the snow was gone days later. Temps in the 40s instead of teens. Good things have been happen weather wise. So this its sooooooooo wrong!

87 amir { 02.05.12 at 9:44 am }

Are we gonna get snow in long island ny in 2012?

88 Ashley { 02.05.12 at 7:49 am }

We are planning a wedding for October 12, 2012 in southern ny, what can we expect?

89 Yvonne { 02.04.12 at 9:10 pm }

How about eastern PA, the Philly area?

90 coolkidd { 02.04.12 at 12:21 pm }

is chesterfield va gonna see any snow ? febuary march ? 2012

91 kyle { 02.03.12 at 5:27 pm }

Wow I bet you feel stupid. This has been the warmest winter with the least precipitation in my 35 years of life. I live in Rochester NY. They say we’ve received nearly 2′ of snow this year…which is unlikely. However I guess if you add a 1/4″ here and a 1/4″ there….I guess anything is possible. Every week since November has seen at least one day in the 40s. Smh.

92 Michelle { 02.03.12 at 9:55 am }

Here in Nebraska it’s been very comparable to a Florida winter. I’ve visited Florida many times during January and February and had I done that this year it wouldn’t have had the same affect. I wouldn’t have been escaping any type of cold or snow. I love the warm weather so I’m in no way complaining…73 on Thanksgiving, upper 60′s on Christmas, upper 60′s and lower 70′s for the end of January, beginning of February…this is my type of weather. Now all we need here in Nebraska is an Ocean with a beach and we’re set :-)
Even though we’ll probably pay via a mild drought, I can handle this! I hate the cold and I hate the snow so I’m absolutely loving this year….no daily complaining as in years past and my seasonal depression didn’t pay me a visit this year. Even if we do get nailed for the next few week, big deal, winter’s on the downhill. What a crazy winter!

93 Tony { 02.03.12 at 8:31 am }

Is winter over for st louis. Or will we have another cold shot. Its been warm, bad for me. How about some snow.

94 Kim { 02.02.12 at 8:11 pm }

I need some snow and cold weather in Pittsburgh! Is it going to happen?!

95 Jason { 02.02.12 at 2:58 pm }

Well, let me restate that. They got it very wrong for the midwest, especially states like IL,MI,IN, and OH. If they had extended that warm forecast over to our area they would have been spot on. But they didn’t.

96 Jason { 02.02.12 at 2:45 pm }

I think we can safely say Farmers Almanac got it wrong this year. Even if the rest of winter turned out cold and snowy, it wouldn’t be that bad. Better luck next year on your predictions :)

97 ken { 02.02.12 at 1:18 pm }

You have predicted extremely cold, avereage snow for my area in northeastern Illinois No snow on ground, lakes are not frozen, so far has been upper 40′s lower 50′s. I’ve lived out here since 1960, never saw this before

98 kathy { 02.01.12 at 11:27 pm }

what snow, here in Ct. seen not much of winter feels like spring….

99 Daniel { 02.01.12 at 9:40 pm }

will it snow here in central va??

100 Al { 02.01.12 at 4:47 pm }

I live in New Hampshire, and we have had no storms so far and any small accumulations have melted. Will it ever snow here?

101 Donna { 02.01.12 at 12:56 pm }

Winter? We’re in NH, there is no snow to be seen!

102 pamela { 02.01.12 at 10:18 am }

hey i live in massachusetts and we haven’t had much snow and it is has been in the 40′s and 50′s. Is there going to be any snow at all. like a good blizzard. just wondering.

103 Amy { 01.31.12 at 4:44 pm }

So in southern Virginia….Franklin county and such are we gonna see any snow?? when??

104 Betsy { 01.31.12 at 12:07 pm }

I have to say you are spot on for the weather where I live (NW Mississippi in a burb of Memphis, TN). It has been warm & wet. Lots and lots of rain so far & we have been in the upper 60′s many, many day. I never thought I would say this, but I want some snow (We are Yankee Transplants – lived in Illinois 30 years prior to moving down here).

105 DP { 01.31.12 at 6:02 am }

As usual, wrong wrong and wrong again

106 kcaz { 01.31.12 at 12:51 am }

I would not take anything these guys say to heart. This Winter? They have never been so way off. Their “detailed forecast” has had everything opposite so far. You cant predict weather so far in advance…you guys should know that.

107 corey dillard { 01.30.12 at 3:23 pm }

wheres the snow for richmond va ?

108 Jaime McLeod { 01.30.12 at 10:28 am }

yoverizon,
Probably not until April, but our predictions for the whole year were released in September. You can read our entire long-range forecast if you pick up a copy of the book, or even just purchase the forecast for your Kindle, Nook, or iPad. http://www.farmersalmanac.com/digital/

109 John Beams { 01.29.12 at 11:28 pm }

What can we expect to see in columbus ohio come february? Any snow? I plowe snow and we sure could use it!

110 yoverizon { 01.29.12 at 12:02 pm }

When is the Summer ’12 outlook going to be posted on the website?

111 CL { 01.29.12 at 9:44 am }

If you compare farmers’ prediction and the actual weather from weather.com, you can see farmers’ was WAY off! Good luck next time farmers’, if anyone will still believe what you say.

112 sydney { 01.29.12 at 9:19 am }

Hi, we live in Georiga and there is no snow! It gets cold but no snow plz write back and tell me what you think.

113 Bree { 01.28.12 at 11:24 am }

Beautiful but very disconcerting weather in NM. After hot fiery summer in 2011 we are not building any snow pack nor aqua fir for possible repeat of same in 2012. Scary and “extreme.”

114 Nancy { 01.28.12 at 10:55 am }

Dayton, oh here. With no good freeze, what’s the prediction for bugs this spring, summer?

115 GoliathImmortal { 01.28.12 at 2:03 am }

So it’s you people causing us to have all this snow in WI…….
Ah Hah !
LOL

116 Steven C { 01.27.12 at 7:43 pm }

What is it looking like for Tennessee this winter are we going to get any snow at all !!

117 dario { 01.27.12 at 6:15 pm }

Why the weather in Baltimore is hot when is supposed to be really cold. (Today was 65 degrees) when last year was like 5 degrees at this time of the year

118 Steven c { 01.27.12 at 5:32 pm }

I live in Tennessee will we see any snow at all this winter ?

119 anonymous { 01.26.12 at 10:33 am }

Hmmm….. Michigan temps have averaged in the mid 30′s and its Jan 26. 30 Day forcast calls for the same weather. We have had two mild snowstorms, and far more rain. What gives Mr. Farmers almanac?

120 Gabrielle { 01.26.12 at 7:58 am }

What will Pittsburgh Pa weather be like? So far it has been such a mild winter and I really am missing the snow :(

121 k { 01.26.12 at 12:29 am }

warm weather in arkansas with a lot of rain hmm

122 Kimberly { 01.25.12 at 11:21 pm }

Hi, I’m in NC and it seems like spring is already here. We will see some colder weather or snow? Thanks

123 april { 01.25.12 at 8:47 pm }

How about for Elmira, New York? It’s been pretty decent so far. Temps in the high 30s, lots of rain, maybe 3-4 inches of snow. But how’s it looking for February?

124 tessa { 01.25.12 at 10:09 am }

what is a good website to find how much rain did hamilton get

125 Jaime McLeod { 01.25.12 at 9:19 am }

GP – I would need a location to give you a forecast for that date.

133 Tasha Baker { 01.22.12 at 2:29 pm }

I live in Springfield, MO we are having above normal temps????? No snow yet, can we expect any this winter?

134 leon { 01.22.12 at 11:49 am }

January is better than December!! Why? because in December, the only snow we had (in Somers) was a flurry and that’s it!!! The rest of the month was extremly mild and rain inculding the end of December. But now in Somers, and all of the Hudson Valley, has bitter cold tempretures and the is 6 inches of snow on the ground.

135 Elizabeth { 01.21.12 at 11:09 am }

I live in Hudson valley NY. how much snow are y’all predicting for us?

136 Lily { 01.21.12 at 1:58 am }

I live in Joplin, Mo. Weather for the past month has been completely unpredictable. Forecasters predict warm weather & it’s freezing & then the opposite. Why is it becoming so hard for them to predict? I’m not looking forward to another terrifying spring & I’m scared that once again we won’t see it coming until it’s too late.

137 Tammy { 01.21.12 at 12:21 am }

Hi just came on your site very interesting. Im in Northern ,Northern California. We are known for rain from oct- apr. We are just now getting it in mid jan. Been extremely frosty up until now. I was wondering what is in store for the next 2 months. I also have plans for a outdoor wedding near the end of oct. What do you think

138 yoverizon { 01.20.12 at 6:15 pm }

Hello! Do you know if February will be colder and snowier than this January? This is about right. In Virginia we have had above normal temps and it has been pretty wet. Im sure hoping for some good snows this winter. I miss the snow so much!

139 Jaime McLeod { 01.20.12 at 9:56 am }

Hi Marilyn,
Unfortunately, it would be cost-prohibitive for us to produce a large-print edition at this time. However, you can buy a PDF, which can be re-sized to your preference, here: http://www.lulu.com/product/ebook/2012-farmers-almanac/18833313

140 marilyn { 01.20.12 at 5:09 am }

I am just wondering why the almanac isn’t avaiable in large print.It would be a lot easier for me to read.I always by and read it several times cover to cover

141 tfrates { 01.19.12 at 11:26 pm }

Hi, was just wonderind if southeastern mass would see any accumulation of snow? I like snow and always hope for one really big snowstorm lol…thanks

148 Marilina { 01.18.12 at 8:00 pm }

Its awesome out here in Iqualit we’ve got about a meter of snow and we go everywhere on our sleds, I couldn’t complain. man I even take my seld to school and I’m only in tenth grade all my friends do to, and at noon hour all us grils have a blast with our super, duper sleds

149 Lisa { 01.18.12 at 5:57 pm }

We live in Knoxville, tn. Not much of a winter so far. Very mild. Are we in for a good snow when we least expect it?

150 Treymont75 { 01.18.12 at 10:19 am }

You guys think it’s dry now..wait til summer comes and you’ll be begging for rain…I see another heat wave of ’93 coming…and not to mention a very active hurricane season…people the sun cycles predict what the weather will be like on earth and this is going to be a very active cycle for the sun this year…be prepared…

152 Frank { 01.17.12 at 3:00 pm }

Waiting for snow here in buffalo

153 Brian Reno { 01.17.12 at 1:23 pm }

Anyone who claims the ability to predict the weather more than 1 week in advance must have attended the Harold Camping school of meteorology.

Here across the midwest (and most of the country) we’ve had record heat, little to no snow and it is mid January! Very white and wet indeed. I SAY GOOD DAY, SIR.

154 Andy { 01.17.12 at 9:01 am }

Spot on for buffalo so far! However I would really like to do some snowmobiling, whats the chance of good snow cover for the rest of winter?

155 Fulgin { 01.16.12 at 4:40 pm }

“The initial week of January was the driest in history. And more than 95 percent of the U.S. had below-average snow cover – ”

Wet wild winter? Not so much

156 Nik { 01.16.12 at 3:36 pm }

Wen will the snow end in northern Indiana? And wen will spring start coming?

157 Jaime McLeod { 01.16.12 at 8:08 am }

Athena, you can see that forecast here: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/long-range-weather-forecast/

158 Jaime McLeod { 01.16.12 at 8:05 am }

Loren Lapp, If you look at the map, we called for “above normal temperatures” in Pennsylvania.

159 yoverizon { 01.15.12 at 11:51 pm }

Its usually snowy at this time of year in Virginia. We havent had the first snowflake yet… just plain old rain. I sure hope february is better but snow just isnt happening this year. Its been too warm. Winter ’12 = worst winter

160 GERRY { 01.15.12 at 3:57 pm }

ROLLIN BIG POWER IN THE SNOW IN BUFFALO AREA

161 Loren Lapp { 01.15.12 at 2:22 pm }

this is a lot of BS. I live in pennsylvania and the low hasnt even gotten down to 32 yet we havent had one snow and its mid january! you farmers need to re-calculate !

162 Wayne Justice { 01.14.12 at 11:27 pm }

The first winter of a winter La Nina is always wet/warm. We broke the rain gauge here in Ohio. Not much snow or cold. Very warm most of the winter. Now, in Jan 2012, the real winter with a foot or more of snow and temps well below freezing is upon us. The next winter will be colder, the 3d winter is the coldest of the La Nina winters according to Joe Bastardi.

163 Ally { 01.14.12 at 10:39 pm }

Is Chesterfield/Richmond Virginia going to get snow this 2012?

164 leon { 01.14.12 at 6:25 pm }

Cate: we had heavey snow here up-state in somers, NY yesterday!

165 Athena { 01.14.12 at 12:07 am }

166 Adam i { 01.13.12 at 2:06 pm }

What’s headed for Detroit, Michigan?!

167 MamaShoob { 01.12.12 at 10:25 am }

I live in South jersey, I hope we get at least one big snow storm this year! We’ve had a lot of snow the last few years, but so far it’s been too warm for the season. Supposedly the second half of winter (February and March) is going to be a lot colder with some snow potential. Keeping my fingers crossed!

168 Dana { 01.12.12 at 8:40 am }

My name is Dana and i’m wondering what the wheather is going to be like this winter in Northwest Arkansas?

169 Jordan { 01.12.12 at 7:23 am }

I’ve already seen a few comments asking about Oklahoma but no answers. I live in southern Oklahoma, we have a national park that literally dried up very early into the summer. It was miserable, what’s the point of summer if you can’t go out on the boat or swimming. Were a lil ways into winter now and I haven’t seen any snow and barely any rain. Are we getting any snow this winter? Will this winter and spring be wet enough to bring our park back to life?

170 Pablo { 01.12.12 at 6:13 am }

Hi. I am a farmer just 35 miles west of Boise, in Wilder, Idaho 83676. What does Jan-march 2012 look like in regards to moisture? Been pretty dry here.

171 ben { 01.12.12 at 1:43 am }

Wondering what the weather conditions for the Syracuse NY area should be and when approximately it could be expected. Thanks!

172 jennifer { 01.11.12 at 9:56 pm }

I live in Northwest Iowa we have had one good snow and thats it.

173 Ahmad { 01.11.12 at 6:58 pm }

Im also in Southeast Michigan. City is Dearborn, and we have only had snow three times since winter started. And it was “>1 in” amount all 3 times.

I hope we get atleast 1 real snow amount, atleast 4” for sledding. Just 1 day i hope. also tomorrows snow is >1 in it says on weather.

174 chad { 01.11.12 at 6:24 pm }

I was wondering if its going to drop a good amount of snow in the beginning of 2012 here in kansas. Its only snowed twice, once in oct and now today, but it calls for temps to be in the 50′s the rest of the week

175 Debbie { 01.11.12 at 4:49 pm }

No need for snow now it’s not Christmas anymore!!

176 Cassie { 01.11.12 at 12:43 pm }

We live in DC and haven’t seen hardly any snow. Is it gonna stay this way?

177 Bryan { 01.11.12 at 11:54 am }

178 brooke { 01.11.12 at 9:20 am }

i live in indianapolis and its mid january right now, the grounds should be frozen, it should be freezing here, but instead it’s warm like spring….. i have spring flowers coming up in my yard and my bushes are buding! this is not normal at all. which has me alittle scared cus the poles are shifting and are earth is waking up with violent volcano eruptions and earthquakes. we were all warned about this threw the mass animal die offs around the world at the begining of 2011, which everyone either ignored or still have no idea about. your local news stations arn’t going to provide you with these stories, you have to go search for them on the net. now weird drilling noises are echoing in the skies all over the world. people are posting these strange noises on youtube. i have heard them to but i that it was construction workers working on the streets nearby until i found out that it was happening everywhere, like the earth itself was groaning. we need to wake up people!

179 Barbara Kuhn { 01.10.12 at 10:31 pm }

I live in the bootheel of missouri far northeast corner of arkansas . What should we prepare ourselves for? Ice? Snow? Or lots of rain?

180 Candace { 01.10.12 at 7:21 pm }

I’m a mail carrier in Western KY, what should I expect this winter?

181 Renee { 01.10.12 at 12:12 pm }

I have a little boy praying for snow. We live in Van Buren, AR. Are we likely to see any.

182 Michael { 01.09.12 at 6:51 pm }

Regarding Sierra Nevadas and Lake Tahoe Region. “Dry as a bone and increased fire danger” Resident of Lake Tahoe area. Heavenly Ski Resort has only snow in area and it is all man-made. Temps are closer to Fall like conditions with below freezing nights. Days quite clear and pleasant for Jan. around 43-53 day temp. Get nice cloud cover from US gov. farming the skies for rain just before frontal changes. Corn rows of comtrails with hopes of seeding incoming weather to produce precip? Who knows. All I know is we should have at least 5ft snow around house this time year. Cheers to the New Year Ya all!

183 chris { 01.09.12 at 6:42 pm }

I live in lower michigan and got maybe 1in of snow this year ( 2012 ) and no ice anywhere and no snow anywhere. will we have any significant amount of snow this year in lower michigan?

184 Karen { 01.09.12 at 3:18 pm }

I buy the farmers almanac every year, but – no offense, guys – I think you’re way off base this year. It’s January 11 and we have no ice on Lake Erie. It’s supposed to be 50 tomorrow. There’s no snow in the Northeast, very little in the West and nothing happening in the Great Plains. We Great Lakes folks may see some lake effect storms yet, but it’s pretty clear that the albido factor (reflectivity of light due to snow cover in winter) is way behind this year. My bet is a LOW snow winter, not a high one. Lots of scientists are now beginning to connect specific weather patterns to climate change. We may have floods, we may even get some whopper snowstorms. But my gut says this will be a much less snowy winter than last year.

185 Calah { 01.09.12 at 12:26 pm }

I’m from middle tennessee and I just absolutey love snow! We definately don’t get as much as the noethern states but I always hope! You predict wet and mild temps this year for us, so I assume that means rain,but, will there be any snow at all? There hasn’t been any yet for us this year. Just a flurry.

186 myieshia { 01.08.12 at 11:44 pm }

204 Kyle { 01.05.12 at 6:06 pm }

What happened to the snowy winter?? quite the opposite what you predicted. the winter has been horribly above normal temps, very dry in minnesota. Will need much above normal snow/ precip to bring lakes, soil moisture back to normal.

208 Tom { 01.05.12 at 10:24 am }

I live in Clearlake, California, Lake County, the weather here has been cold and dry, we need lots of rain to fill the lake, most of the businesses here depend on the Lake in some way for there lively hood, including myself. I am retired and have a Catfishing guide service. I see the forecast is for a dryer than normal year for us, hope mother nature gives us some rain.

209 okie { 01.05.12 at 10:15 am }

i would love to see it snow every other day for 3 months in massachusetts

210 Jeremy { 01.05.12 at 8:35 am }

I live in central Montana and with this prediction of lots of snow and cold, I think is wrong, we have been in the high 50′s and high 40′s all winter so far, this time last year we had over 3 ft of snow so far this year 8in or so. Setting record temps.

211 eric { 01.04.12 at 9:36 pm }

Live in small town near Asheboro NC. Usually look at the Farmers Almanac to judged how much bad weather was coming. To see how much hay would need for livestock.

212 shawn { 01.04.12 at 8:14 pm }

cant wait for some snow coming over

213 Stacie { 01.04.12 at 5:13 pm }

Wow, SW Iowa in January so far has been wonderful!! I am about to plant radishes (LOL)!! Is it safe to do so or should I wait a while? It’s just so nice and I bet they would grown too!!

214 Lisa { 01.04.12 at 2:51 pm }

I am planning a 90th birthday party for my mom for Feb. 26th 2012. Do you have any idea what the weather may be like the 25th thru the 27th?

219 james cochran { 01.03.12 at 6:46 pm }

Farmers almanac is very wrong this year. 45f in late december in chicago. Proof you can’t rely on anything these days. Spring may be early. Maybe even february.

220 Really { 01.03.12 at 4:33 pm }

For anyone else who would like to ask the magic website how they’re winter will be. Go ahead and scroll up and look for a location near you. Im sure after 659 questions with differing geographical locations you can find one to suite your needs;.

221 Hafdolla23 { 01.03.12 at 4:14 pm }

Listen people…they make PREDICTIONS…not REALITIES. This is a year like 50% of the other years. Half the time they are right and half the time they are wrong. For you in the Chicagoland area like me that read we were supposed to get above average snowfalls and arctic cold….well this is the 50% wrong year as you could of guessed. We will be lucky to see 20 inches of snow this year (more like 10-15) and average temps will be higher which we should all enjoy. Now I made a PREDICTION. Who do you think will be right? Maybe I should get paid….

222 Chad Seim { 01.03.12 at 8:23 am }

You guys were dead on!!

223 Jaime McLeod { 01.03.12 at 6:53 am }

242 jiffy247 { 12.31.11 at 2:57 pm }

Um……..here in chicago there is NO SNOW….. just wondering if there is any way that you can refund the money i spent on fixing and updating my snowplowing trucks and buying my material for the upcoming” white and wet” winter farmers almanac predicted? just kidding, but it has been a disappointment so far going into the new year. Here’s to hoping for ALOT of snow for the remainder of the season….

243 Anne { 12.31.11 at 2:46 pm }

what about southwest ohio? I am wishing for snow and so far nothing :(

244 Ashley { 12.31.11 at 2:32 pm }

245 derek { 12.31.11 at 10:19 am }

WHERE IS THE SNOW?????? I am in Maine and we have only seen an inch a couple of times before it is promptly removed by rain or 45-50 degree weather. this is horrible. i have the snowmobile all ready to go and all i can do is look at it. not what i was hoping for after last winter. horrid.

246 Connor { 12.31.11 at 7:19 am }

I’m in new Hampshire how’s it looking for snowmobiling here hoping for alot of snow but looks like we will only get rain and snow mix. Tell me I’m wrong and we will get lots of snow!

248 Dennis { 12.30.11 at 10:28 am }

At least here in MD we had a snow in October…so much for the bad winter the weatherman predicted! The bright side—-we have not lost power since the hurricane!!!

249 kelly { 12.29.11 at 10:40 pm }

Hey, so I am in Northeast we had a great snow year last year, I am so waiting for the snow.Will we be lucky enough to het a good storm or two, I just live it absolutely love snow….when is it Comming ..thanks ..

250 kelly { 12.29.11 at 10:37 pm }

Hi, so I live in northeast and I am dying for snow, a realy good storm we had so many last yearany chance for snow here and soon.,

251 MC { 12.29.11 at 7:57 pm }

Rain, rain, rain. All Maryland gets is rain. Whats up with the snow? Its already January, and NO SNOW! This has been a real bust.

252 MC { 12.29.11 at 7:09 pm }

Hi, I live in northern MD. I am wondering if we would get a lot of snow for our area. I also hope we do, because school is stressing me out! [PLEASE LET THERE BE ANOTHER BLIZZARD, LIKE THE BLIZZARD OF 2010!]

253 Justin Taylor { 12.29.11 at 6:34 pm }

I have to agree with this so far we have had above normal temperatures and it has been more stormy and wet across Connecticut. And here are some reasons why…..First of all The Northern Atlantic Oscillation is in a positive phase (last year it was negative meaning High Pressure came from Greenland and locked in cold air from Canada to the west, the jet stream set up shop and kept producing one storm after another….this year the NAO is still positive….also we also look at the Arctic Oscillation and we are in a La Nina pattern thus far…..I am currently learning about this as i work my way of becoming a meteorologist. Figure id share my input on this.

254 Dani { 12.29.11 at 4:34 pm }

SE PA – what about us?

255 Stephanie { 12.29.11 at 4:02 pm }

Hello,
We are looking to do a snow skiing weekend in North Carolina for January or February around the Beech Mtn area or whereever the skiing would be best for that area. Any ideas which weekend would be the best snow wise? Thanks.

256 Jaime McLeod { 12.29.11 at 3:25 pm }

Rene,
Our predictions are made two years in advance, and we never change them.

257 Rob { 12.29.11 at 12:48 pm }

Where’s the snow! Michigans snow is really lacking even in the northern part of the state. You report very white/wet. Not from what I see. We actually have less snow than normal this season.
I want to go snowmobiling without having to drive to Canada.

258 Tina { 12.29.11 at 11:57 am }

I know we are just finishing 2011 but we are definitely below average for our snow fall at a mere .55″ and our temps are above average. For winter 2012 you have predicted normal temps with average snow fall, what will that look like? When are we expected to be getting snow?

259 Patryce { 12.29.11 at 11:43 am }

I live in DC metro area. Just got a new ski jacket for my birthday, but there is no snow. It’s bumming me out. Maybe will have a cold March. I would hate for the season to only last a half of Jan and Feb.

260 Rene { 12.29.11 at 11:38 am }

Chicago has been unusally warm, it is 45 degrees here today and no snow. This is definitely abnormal for this time of year. Do you backtrack on your predictions if there is no snow and abnormally warm temps?

261 Matt { 12.28.11 at 11:42 pm }

Where is the snow for northern Indiana? I’m going crazy with all this warm air and rain!

262 Alison { 12.28.11 at 6:47 pm }

Southern WI and Northern I’LL have been having unusually warm weather (well…not warm, infact too cold for me, but warm for here) and have yet to get any snow that sticks………are January and February suppose to bring all the snow we haven’t gotten nd then some or are we suppose to continue with this “mild” winter? We’ve only had a handful of days with any snow at all and most I believe were rain/snow mix

263 Des { 12.28.11 at 3:43 pm }

I live in Western North Dakota. We had record snowfall last winter something like 180 inches of snow. They predicted over 200 inches this year. Here we are almost Jan and don’t have any snow and the temps are in the upper 40′s today! It’s coming im afraid, but I’M LOVING it thus far :) Brown Christmas or not!

264 Christina { 12.28.11 at 11:57 am }

Yeah, How about it? Any snow fall for North Alabama in 2012? We love the snow because we do not get it often.

265 Olivia { 12.27.11 at 10:28 pm }

I want snow for northern Alabama will it snow this December 2011 or on January 2012

266 bill { 12.27.11 at 2:00 pm }

12/27/11/ so far no snow

267 Julie { 12.27.11 at 1:45 pm }

how will the winter be for New Jersey?

268 kendra { 12.27.11 at 11:08 am }

I wish Louisa Ky would get some snow so I could have a snow day from school!

269 Tammie { 12.26.11 at 7:41 pm }

Hi there! I live in central Michigan (in the middle of the mitten). I have farther to drive to work this winter. Will I be driving more in sun, rain, ice, or snow? I am hoping for an easy winter that slips into a glorious spring that makes a perfect foil for a beautiful summer to emerge…one can dream

270 ella { 12.26.11 at 2:15 pm }

I think that it will snow cause it looks as though it is right know jk
BUT WILL IT!!!!!!!! :)

271 Patti Loree { 12.26.11 at 11:29 am }

I live in central Illinois and I was wondering if anyone had any idea of what winter is to bring for us this year?

277 Jimbooo { 12.24.11 at 12:09 pm }

I’m wondering which planet they are forecasting for. It’s certainly not the one Milwaukee, WI is on. It’s Christmas Eve and there’s no snow on the ground to be seen. It’s not even cold enough to frost my car windows.

278 Deb { 12.24.11 at 6:55 am }

I am sooo Sick of this warm weather in Va. this Dec. Some people’s income depends on cold weather

279 ginger { 12.24.11 at 12:05 am }

What happened to the “worse than last year” winter that was predicted for the Chicago area? It has been so warm here 40′s and rain and cloudy days. We’ve had only an inch and a half of snow and it melted quickly! 40′s for Christmas day?!?! I feel robbed of a beautiful white Christmas!! I love snow!

280 Grand Ma Linda Chartier { 12.23.11 at 11:58 pm }

298 Mich Igan { 12.21.11 at 3:40 pm }

Same here in the great state of Michigan. We probably got only about 2 inches of snow until today, 40 degree temps. Wonderin’ when im gonna see the great white winter

299 Sam { 12.21.11 at 10:58 am }

Live in Buffalo NY, we’ve gotten about 1 inch of snow up until December! It’s 50 degrees out right now!!! Completely insanely warm, definitely weird.

300 Jaime McLeod { 12.21.11 at 8:47 am }

Barb, I think you may be looking in a different Almanac. All of California is region 7 on our map. As for wet weather, we call for some rain and/or snow (depending on elevation) early next month.

301 julia { 12.21.11 at 8:27 am }

i mean like seriously it snowed alot last year in georgia so there is going 2 bee more snoww this year than last year ahhhhh lol :)

302 Barb { 12.20.11 at 10:03 pm }

What happened to the month of December in the Sierra Foothills just east of Sacramento. Hard to tell whether we are in region 2 or 3 due to the thick lines on the map page. We have had 2 hundredths of an inch since the beginning of December, and the prediction is normal in my copy of The Farmers Almanac. I am looking for the wet weather. When will we have it?

303 jessica trojoske { 12.20.11 at 2:02 pm }

308 amy { 12.20.11 at 10:15 am }

Hi there..WE WANT SNOW!!! What is in store for the western berkshires NY, MA, VT??
pls say great snowy storms;)

309 ShawnM { 12.20.11 at 6:47 am }

I am waiting for winter to kick in. So far two of the predictions for winter storms have been a bust for Missouri. I want it to be very cold and very snowy, not mild and rainy as it is right now. 41 degrees is mild compared to what it should be this time of year. And it is supposed to be in the 40′s tomorrow as well which is the first day of winter. I don’t understand it, we had hundreds or thousands more acorns on the oak trees this year than we did the year before and the 2010/2011 winter was very harsh in the cold and snowy department. I am hoping the cold and snow arrive soon! I’d love to have a great winter! From central Missouri

310 Brandon { 12.20.11 at 4:12 am }

I live in the foothills of nc and was wondering if it is ever going to get cold this winter? So far 2011 is almost over and we havent had a winter yet. Please have good news.

311 Jessica { 12.20.11 at 12:04 am }

I live on the il side of st Louis. Can you tell me how it will be here? When should we see snow? Thanks!

312 Theresa { 12.19.11 at 11:08 pm }

Hoping for a mild Michigan winter ??
Live in the traverse city area
No snow so far ! Any idea ??

313 Chrissy { 12.19.11 at 2:40 pm }

I know we will not have snow for Christmas, but I live in north Idaho and we ave not seen really ANY snow this yeay compared to what we normally get. I am sad that my kids have not been able to sled…or do any other winter time activities. Can you shed some light on when and how much snow we will be expecting.

Thank you!!!

314 Lora { 12.19.11 at 2:25 pm }

I was just wondering if anyone knew about snow this year for North Carolina? Like in the foot hills area:)

315 Jaime McLeod { 12.19.11 at 6:56 am }

Hanna, If you look at our long-range forecast, we don’t predict a white Christmas for anyone.

316 Jaime McLeod { 12.19.11 at 6:50 am }

Gloria and Amy,
Our forecasts never change. We make them roughly two years in advance using a nearly 200-year-old formula. Once we release it, we never backtrack. However, there are several other farmers’ almanacs on the market. Perhaps you saw another one’s forecast, then ours.

317 Jaime McLeod { 12.19.11 at 6:47 am }

Anthony,
We do answer questions on this page, but not if the answers are already in the story above, or if we’ve already answered them in the comments below. We’ve gotten nearly 600 comments on this page. If we answered all of them – especially when the information is accessible, either in the story above, or on our long-range forecast page (which is linked from the story above) – there would be no time for anything else.

318 Anthony { 12.18.11 at 4:43 pm }

You do notice they can careless about this page, they never answer any of your questions. just figure IF you get snow it will be alot less than last year or well below normal unless you live in upper midwest which will probably see average snowfall. Keep an eye on the NAO to go negative if you want snow, and follow the GFS Maps for a rough idea of whats to come in the following few days, they update few times a day and can be close to accurate in short term (2-3 days). watch Henry Margusity’s daily videos, hes the best, at Accuweather.com click News and Video then click Blogs, enjoy

319 Kathryn Smith { 12.18.11 at 9:26 am }

Hey! I was wondering when it will snow in Georgia. And what would be an estimated snow accumulation? Oh! And also, how many inches? I’m from New York and just moved to Georgia three years ago and I miss the cold weather so much…:( anyways, thanks!

320 Connie Koster { 12.18.11 at 1:14 am }

What is predicted for Pittsburgh, PA? A lot of snow?

321 deidra { 12.17.11 at 6:39 pm }

Hey what kind of winter will Rochester ny get this winter.

322 gloria { 12.17.11 at 5:40 pm }

I am very dissapointed at the weather forecast for the mid atlantic corridor. I don’t even want to celebrate christmas.with these mild rainy temperatures. A white christmas was promised to us earlier and now its not. And a mild winter! You predicted earlier a lot of snow for the corridor. Now you are predicting slushy snow. For the winter with milx temperatures. Noone knows what god plans are. For the each day to come. I don’t even listen to you weather men anymore. You have lied. I just take everyday as god makes it.

323 james stewart { 12.17.11 at 2:04 pm }

Hey guys I live in missouri and I was hoping if anyone would know how bad its gonna get

324 Amy Bregy { 12.17.11 at 12:27 pm }

I have got to say I am a little disappointed. I read this about a month ago, and it said we would get a blizzard 17-19th in the Northeast, and heavy snow from 20-24th. NOW it says something totally different! How can you change the results of the farmers almanac? Just curious. Cause now it does not look like we will be getting any snow anytime soon. I have bought the farmers almanac every year for a long time, and now I am wondering if I am wasting my time and money. If I buy the book that information does not get changed, so why did you change it online? Just Curious.

325 Anthony D { 12.17.11 at 9:10 am }

I dont understand how people can predict weather for the next 6 months. local weather men cant even predict a week how can a group of people predict 6 months or the winter season. non of this is true take weather and everything around us day by day . Just like how people say december 21,2012 is the end of the world . no one can predict that its just a fairy tale fantasy and this is too.

326 Jennifer { 12.16.11 at 10:35 pm }

I love the snow for my kids. but hate it myself. I work in landscaping and it’s the least favorite part of my job. It does a number on my body! I’d love to know what southwestern VA’s outlook is…for my benefit!

327 Hanna { 12.16.11 at 8:31 pm }

This whole thing has gotten many excited about having a white christmas. Well the weather people predicted that we would get the same as last year, but earlier. Were not even gonna have a white christmas by the looks of things. Really? We just want snow, and to have a white christmas. Thanks weather people for getting our hopes up /:

How about michigan? 25 miles north of detroit

331 sqnumbrs { 12.15.11 at 10:12 pm }

I am soo glad to hear that I am not the only person looking for some snow. I live in North MO near the Iowa border and it has been extremely mild weather. Yesterday, it rained all day with thunderstorms and temps reaching nearly 60 in KC. What?! If only it had been below freezing…. Anyway, it gets cold but up til this month, it didn’t seem like October or November around here. It was almost like Spring—wreaked havoc on my family’s allergies. It would be very cool one day and quite warm the next. Anyway, it’s very wet and cold now. We had a lite dusting of snow a week back but the sun melted it the next day. Looks like no white Christmas for us! Maybe January will be better…I am looking for a few snow days!!!

332 Theresa { 12.15.11 at 9:43 am }

I live in Buffalo NY & we havent seen any snow yet this “winter” season! It rains almost every day but no snow-today its almost 60 degrees & its December 15th! Wheres the snow? I want a white Christmas!

333 Troy { 12.15.11 at 9:06 am }

I am in Rock Falls, IL and this area is supposed to be getting moe snow than anywhere in the country yet all we have so far is mid 40′s to mid 50′s and rain. Looks like “they” missed it this time.

how much snow we will have in virginia and maryland?

336 Lynn { 12.14.11 at 10:34 am }

Hi…we live in Plymouth, Massachusetts. What can we expect for snowfall this winter? We plow snow so the more, the better!

337 Cat { 12.14.11 at 1:47 am }

I live in Portland, Oregon and we’ve had an unusual fall…colder than normal and dry with sun…we never see this much sun in November and December…in fact we didn’t get this much sun over the summer. The temps have been in the high 20′s at night and 36-43 during the day. Mt Hood saw snow early, but it has leveled off. In fact this past weekend boarders and skiers were fighting slush and rocks during the day and icy conditions at night.

338 Karla { 12.13.11 at 11:37 pm }

I commute between New York and Pennsylvania along the snowbelt region of both states that borders Lake Erie between Chautauqua Institution & Meadville. You guys claim a stormy, snowy winter……well, even though today there was a dusting of snow on the ground, I was out in a sweatshirt in forty-degree weather. All we’ve had is rain. We haven’t really seen the sun for weeks. The lake effect precipitation started in October, but we’ve barely been able to hit the six-inch mark for snowfall records in both New York and Pennsylvania.

Is there any snow in the forecast for us for Christmas? Please?

346 Bradley { 12.12.11 at 9:23 am }

I live in the piedmont of North Carolina, I was just wondering if we can expect any snow or winter weather at all for that matter this year? We’ve really missed out the couple years and hoping maybe I could get some good news from someone. Thanks Bradley

347 Jaime McLeod { 12.12.11 at 8:37 am }
348 Wags { 12.12.11 at 2:50 am }

It’s funny how here in the Pacific Northwest we haven’t had a single drop of rain all December during a wetter than average winter. Plus last month we only had one big weak of weather and otherwise we had no weather at all. It may be that there’s just a high pressure system over the area and it’ll move through like any other weather system but boy has it hung around for a long time.

Hi-I am on a committee for our high school’s first senior celebration. One of the areas we are able to use and decorate is the outdoor courtyard. The date of our event is April 14, 2012 in Aurora, Illinois. What is the precipitation and temp outlook? We wondered if we should even plan on using this space. What time is sunset and sunrise? The event starts at 10PM on April 14 and ends at 5am on April 15. How often are you correct? I know you were right on for my outdoor wedding in May 1988. Thanks!!!

Last year we had snow for a few weeks (but it really felt like months) and then it iced. I dared my friend to run down our steep driveway after it had iced. She did it, for some reason. But anyway, I kinda hope it DOES snow a lot this year; simply because I don’t want to go to work. I am 23 and work 1 hour away from my house, so if its “dangerous at all” (that’s what my boss says), I get to stay home. Bring on the snow

Last year I believed. Y’all called for warmer weather here in Memphis. And we ended up seeing snow 2 times a week from Christmas. To feb 10th. I’m just saying. No one ever really knows but when Memphis. Usually. Has all four seasons. It means two things. In 20 years I lived here ice or one big snow totalling. 4 inchs or so

447 jim { 11.18.11 at 2:26 am }

I think it’s up to Mother Nature to determine whats in store for us. Look at the doppler and jet streams and you can predict the weather on your own. But only a few days in advance. Nobody really knows what is in store more that 2 to 5 days ahead. Don’t believe predictions they are only 50% maybe accurate.

I like almanacs cuz they tell the truth most of the time and they are predicted by the motions of the moon.

459 Linda { 11.14.11 at 5:01 pm }

If I’ve learned anything by living my entire life in the Philadlephia, PA region, is that there really is no such thing as a quiet winter. We get a mixed bag here in what I like to call the “lower northeast” – not quite the “it missed us again” Mid-Atlantic (DC), but not the blustery winter extreme that is New England either. In the Lower Northeast – we get it all and it can all happen pretty quickly. Normally a La Nina would signal a slightly warmer temp and slightly higher percipitation in the form of rain for the Lower Northeast. However, last year we had a La Nina effect as well and the area saw above average snowfall. In contrast, just a few miles south (DC) missed out on most of the snow.

In the Lower Northeast, it’s all about the jet stream, where the low forms, if there is a transfer of energy from a wimpy front out of Ohio or the Great Lakes, and if there is cold air in Canada to pull down. We can go from 50 and rain to 28 and a blizzard in a matter of just a couple of hours. And, based on my experience, unless the Atlantic is unseasonably warm this winter, which I have not heard reports of, the Philadelphia region will again skirt the front line and be nearly impossible to predict with any conviction. Kind of like the October snow storm. Philly got .30 inches of wet snow, gone before it even fell. Less than 20 miles North of the city saw six inches that stuck around a couple of days.

460 Julianne Leigh { 11.14.11 at 12:09 pm }

How about St. Paul/Mpls this year for 20122/2012 what’s in store for us as far as snowstorms and amounts?

461 Jaime McLeod { 11.14.11 at 11:36 am }

Ben, You can see more more specific predictions here: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/long-range-weather-forecast/

462 HiddenHand { 11.14.11 at 7:17 am }

So far it’s been warm-warm-warm in IA! Every cold front is short lived, and doesn’t bring temps down nearly as far as initially forecasted, while every warm front yields even warmer temps than were predicted, and lasts for weeks at a time before meteorologists try to say it’s ‘coming to an end’ because of an impending cold front – but then of course the typical pattern plays out, the cold plunge is weak and brief, and within a few days we’re right back to above normal temps for long stretches of time. This was the exact weather pattern for IA’s mild winters that dominated for decades prior to 2005/2006 when we actually started having *real* winters around here again, like in the mid to late 70s.

463 Wags { 11.14.11 at 2:31 am }

Ha! Wetter than normal winter in the northwest! No offense but so far we have had about half of the average rainfall up to this date. Maybe we’re just having a late start. Also, what is the probability of valley snow for the Portland/ Vancouver metro area? Specifically in the outlying areas just north of Vancouver but still in the valley.

464 Michelle Ross { 11.13.11 at 4:24 pm }

Um, there is no wetter than normal in the Pacific NW. I can tell you our forcasr from now (beginning of November) till the beginning of June……..there’s little Bitty stinging rain, big fat rain, rain that comes down sideways, and sometimes, it seems like its coming right up from under you…..to quote one of the greatest fictional characters alive…..Forrest Gump!

479 Katie { 11.09.11 at 4:07 am }

Trish I have lived in Gainesville my whole life and never have seen snow .. It’s possible to have snow flurries but it’s only lasted about 20 min last year

482 Jaime McLeod { 11.08.11 at 2:58 pm }

Todd, Portland falls into the green area on the map. Because of the moderating effect of the ocean, you guys generally see slightly milder winter conditions than up here in “central” Maine.

483 resa { 11.08.11 at 2:33 pm }

I live near Seattle, WA. Many locals think were going to have a lot of snow this winter.

484 lolatufools { 11.08.11 at 10:29 am }

500 Anthonypilone01 { 11.03.11 at 3:16 pm }

Wow people, the weather is a naturally occurring thing, not something the good people of FA have control over. It is not their fault that millions are without power because of an early storm. Just sayin’.

What can I expect in southern maine, I would love to have all the snow and cold temps I can get. Recent years have been terrible for snowmobiling, lack of snow and warm temps have ended the season early, what can i expect this year?

526 RENE { 10.30.11 at 11:04 am }

are we supposed to get snow in main this year??

527 David { 10.30.11 at 9:58 am }

Dear FA you need to think about updating your system. The Earth axis has shifted and thus the weather paterns have also adjusted. from where I am in Southern Indiana I can already tell we are in for a long hard winter. Packed with Snow. Do you beleave the Persimon seeds can predict the winter weather of the advancing year? so far all I have seen are spoons. Not Knives or Forks. also last year your forcast was off. so how can we rely on your forcast this year.. I figure it is all hit or miss. by the way did you predict an early snow fall for new york and surounding states? because as of yesterday October 29 2011 2.1 milion are with out power as more than 2 foot of snow has already fallen. so dear sirs and Mams of FA fix your system.

528 nikthered { 10.30.11 at 9:49 am }

I love the weather here, true Western Washingtonian right here :) So I would not mind extra rain or snow this year!

Snow prediction for Mont airy, md

558 anthony { 10.22.11 at 6:54 pm }

that is wrong. Texas is suppose to be dry and above normal temps. The north east is supposed to be a little below temps and way above average snow fall.

559 Boise { 10.22.11 at 12:01 pm }

Idaho will be very cold with lots of snow this year…is what I’m hearing. :) It will be nice to have fresh snow for Christmas so all the kids can play in the snow.

560 jake { 10.22.11 at 5:42 am }

In south central pennsylvania I’ve been “reading” the wooly caterpillars every fall for the upcoming fall/winter weather season…the sighting this year was a ‘coatless’ wolly that implied a long and mild wall, 57 degrees on Christmas, and a mild winter to follow.

561 Desi { 10.21.11 at 7:43 pm }

I live in Vandalia Missouri and I was wondering what I was supposed to expect for winter this year?? Hopefully not another blizzard like last year..

562 Rachell { 10.21.11 at 2:04 pm }

What will the weather be like for West Virginia?

563 Julia Aldrich { 10.21.11 at 8:37 am }

So Texas weather has been really rough. We’ve lost crops and animals on our farm. We lost most of our fruit trees too.
We live ne of Conroe, Texas. Is there any hope for rain or cooler weather this winter?

564 Ken { 10.21.11 at 4:43 am }

I was wondering the projected outlook for Southern New Hampshire looks like for 2011/2012.

565 Kyle { 10.21.11 at 4:23 am }

What I mean by small snow events is 1-3 inch mixed events though if you live in a favored micro climate due to geography you will get more squeezed out with higher amounts.

566 Kyle { 10.21.11 at 4:21 am }

I bet rather then large snow events the Pacific Northwest will have several small ones where there is a lot of melting and refreezing allowing for ice days for the school systems.

With an active storm track I wouldn’t rule out an ice storm or two and a wide-spread wind storm 70+ which those of us in the PNW are over due for.

567 Kyle { 10.21.11 at 4:20 am }

Will the PNW mountains have more snow then last years bust-o-rama?

You should’ve seen the mountains last January when the inversion came melting any remaining snow pack that fell in December’s hit and miss storms. It was chilly in the valleys but almost 70F up in the mountain passes and even some places on the beach had 60+ spell for several days.

January felt anything BUT what mother nature said.

568 kathy { 10.20.11 at 10:36 pm }

578 kay talley { 10.19.11 at 10:49 am }

I live in far east Texas Panhandle, Miami, Tx. we are like every where in tx, dry, dry,dry. Just wondering, the way I read it. We are in the southern plains, right, or central? If that’s right, it means, if I read it right we are going to have unreasonably warm temp, which will bring moisture.

579 Jaime McLeod { 10.19.11 at 8:32 am }

Angie,
We had to stop responding to comments on this thread because there were just too many to keep up with, and because we believe our outlook stands for itself. You can see just by glancing at the map that we are calling for it to be “wet and mild” in Arkansas this winter. If you’d like more detail than what is provided in this overview, you can read our long-range forecast. We provide up to four months for free here: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/long-range-weather-forecast/

To see four months, you need to have a free membership and be logged in. If you want to see more than four months, you’ll need to get the 2012 Farmers’ Almanac. We have print versions available for purchase here: http://store.farmersalmanac.com/staging/farmers-almanac/c-4851.htm
and digital versions available for download here: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/digital/

593 paol { 10.16.11 at 4:25 pm }

well well, for those of you who have decided to stay in midwest, north east and even pacific northwest. what do you expect. YOU HAVE WINTER. I left it all behind forever ago to go to the southwest, california, hawaii and arizona and SAFE mexico, YES IT IS SAFE contrary to what our wonderfully biased media tells us. CHOOSE SUNSHINE and celebrate and be outside all year long. where you live. LIFE IS A CHOICE, thanks! have a happy day

I am in southeast Texas and around here the weather folks are saying we are in store for a 9yr drought which I am not really believing. We have had a pretty rough drought here this yr including several forest fires. Can you tell me if this coming winter will truly be wetter than normal?

599 Jaime McLeod { 10.14.11 at 3:34 pm }

You’re welcome to be skeptical, James, but wedding planning is possibly the most common reason people consult our long-range forecast. We receive hundreds of inquiries each year from brides- and grooms-to-be.

600 Helen { 10.14.11 at 3:30 pm }

I live just outside of Washington DC in the Fairfax, VA area. I have been watching the squirrels and chipmunks going crazy trying to stash tons of acorns and nuts the last few weeks. Their fur has gotten much thicker, too. I think I’ll order my snow boots tonight…lol.

601 James { 10.14.11 at 11:40 am }

Jamie, I cannot believe you are going to suggest to Joan that she make wedding plans based on your long term forecast. There is no way to know what the weather is going to be like on January 12th. Most forecasts beyond a few days become less and less accurate. If you go beyond 2 weeks, it starts to become a crapshoot. I can’t believe how many people believe in the accuracy of these types of forecasts.

602 Jaime McLeod { 10.14.11 at 9:54 am }

Joan, You should be able to see that date on our free long-range forecast: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/long-range-weather-forecast/

608 Krystal { 10.12.11 at 10:22 am }

Fall color has hit here really early this year…we started having chilly nights in August of low 50′s and thats not normal for our area. ALL the wooly worms here in South Central Missouri (Fort Leonard Wood area) have been solid black, many of them large sized. No One has seen ANY with any brown on them. Persimmons when cut open are showing spoons. I’m not sure about all the folk tales of course but they all seem to be lining up with the Farmers Almanac Forcasts. You can feel it in the air….we have a bad winter coming…but we’re overdue for one so I am not suprised….I’m just preparing our household….~!!! :)

609 Jaime McLeod { 10.12.11 at 9:48 am }

What will the weather be like in Michigan this winter?

651 Missy { 09.28.11 at 11:52 am }

I remember seeing something from you guys one time about squirrels harvesting acorns and what kind of winter weather we are going to get. I am in NC and I have never seen our squirrels harvesting so many acorns so early. They have made a mess of the yard but are so happy! What does that mean for winter weather here?

652 Jaime Simon { 09.28.11 at 10:59 am }

665 Jaime McLeod { 09.26.11 at 9:58 am }

Matt, We’re calling for a pretty mild winter in Mass. You’ll have to head to Maine, NH, Vermont, or Northern New York if you want good skiing this year.

666 Rochelle Pierce { 09.25.11 at 9:37 pm }

I live north of Seattle in Western Washington. I have been told we have the hardest weather to predict. That being said, I was wondering if due to the La Nina we would get snow this year. Our local forcasters are saying that its going to be wetter and colder than normal due to La Nina. Do you concur and do you see snow. If so, when would be the best chance for snow in the Everett area? I wait all year for snow. If its going to be cold I deserve snow. Would love to have a white Christmas….for once!

667 Randy Watrous { 09.25.11 at 11:50 am }

What about the weather for Zionsville pa in 2012? a lot of snow or little?

To everyone else asking about the winter, please look at what we say above, and especially at the map. You can buy one in our store here: http://store.farmersalmanac.com/staging/farmers-almanac/c-4851.htm

Or find one using the store locator on our homepage, or get a digital edition of our forecast (for Nook, Kindle, iPad, iPhone, or Google Books) here: http://www.farmersalmanac.com/digital/

675 Ellen { 09.23.11 at 11:05 am }

I live in Indianapolis IN and what kind of weather should we expect here in Indy? We got blasted last year w/snow and ice. yuk! Our summer was about the same as last year, hot/dry (43 days above 90 degress) then the winter was brutal. What can we look for this year? a repeat of last? (think NOT!)

676 forest { 09.22.11 at 10:24 pm }

I live in SE Michigan and hope we get LOTS OF SNOW. I love the white stuff and after having to suffer through such an AWFUL summer am looking forward to Winter. Those that don’t like Winter should move south. Oh yeah, when you get tired of the heat and humidity in the southern states don’t complain to me! (That part of my comment is only meant for northerns who choose to complain about winter and then spend thier summers in air conditioning! That’s cause they think it’s so great to have the HOT temperatures around.

677 yancy Foster { 09.22.11 at 7:44 pm }

682 calvin { 09.21.11 at 1:01 pm }

I am in lynchburg, va. We have gotten more and more snow over the past few winters. Can we expect more of the same? I love the snow and cold weather, it makes for good winter backpacking and local snowshoeing.

683 Anthony { 09.21.11 at 10:47 am }

I agree Maryland will have stormy weather and having above average snowfall this winter, do to the effect of how much rain we had, in which is the wettest summer I have ever experienced by far, including the hurricane Irene that went through the east coast.
But, I DISAGREE we will be having above normal temperature!!!!!

684 Misty { 09.21.11 at 6:22 am }

Lots of snow for n.e Georgia this winter?

685 Jenni { 09.20.11 at 3:20 pm }

Hi, can you give me an idea of weather from southern California through southern Oregon the week of October 11-17? Most concerned about northern Cali to/from Grants Pass.

686 David Jaster { 09.20.11 at 12:21 pm }

I live 30 miles southeast of Denver. Do you anticipate any significant snowfall in this area prior to Christmas?

687 Carik { 09.20.11 at 10:08 am }

I don’t know. We are in the Sierra Nevada (Sonora) and I’ve been hearing nothing but horror stories about winter. It can stay away as far as I’m concerned. Last year was a very long cold, snowy, power outage nightmare and the year before we had a snow storm a week for nine months. Summer is my favorite time of year and you don’t even want to know what I’m paying for propane (heat) since two long cold winters. I’m hoping it doesn’t happen. :-)

688 Km Koesler { 09.20.11 at 9:37 am }

Oh God, I hope you’re right and the NWS is wrong. They are calling for our drought to continue through summer 2012. I like your prediction better. (N. Tx with less than 9″ rainfall since Jan 1, 2011 – regular 24″-26″/yr)

689 Jaime McLeod { 09.20.11 at 8:15 am }

Sorry Christy,
We’re calling for “Considerable cloudiness, chilly, with showery rains” for the 16th through the 19th. But, the 20th is supposed to be “Pleasant,” so, just this once, I’ll hope that we’re off by a day.

690 nicole { 09.20.11 at 3:55 am }

703 Michael Cook { 09.16.11 at 5:05 am }

Hi,

I’m in Flagstaff, AZ. I notice on the map that the Almanac’s weather experts are forecasting below average precipitation for the ’10-’11 winter season. Similar to last year? We were nearly 2 feet below average last winter.

Thanks!

704 Carrie { 09.15.11 at 11:36 pm }

I am due the end of Feb with baby #2. So what should southern Indiana be expecting then?

705 Katt { 09.15.11 at 9:26 pm }

What will Central Jersey be like this winter? I’m hoping for a warm winte. I can deal with rain but not snow!

706 musivick { 09.15.11 at 6:59 pm }

dryer & wrmer for coastal SC is great for me… i’m putting in 20 ‘Sweetspires’ for a investment of $280 on my limited budget…
it would seem that my personal shamanistic view into this project is correct (for the shrubs to flourish)… i wanted conformation that my landscape investment would be vital come next spring…

thanks for the forecast which favors my pre-determined plan-of-action…

707 daughlobos { 09.15.11 at 5:39 pm }

what about southern cal?

708 Laurie { 09.15.11 at 4:04 pm }

very mild and very wet for upstate South Carolina…I’m pretty close to the NC border so I’m sure in will freeze here so I’m guessing ICE grr…I hope no ice storms. Rather have snow. Thanks Love the Almanac :)

709 Sandra { 09.15.11 at 3:21 pm }

I live in the furtherest north western mountains of North Carolina, about a mile from the Tennessee/NC stateline. What is the predicted precip. and weather for us this winter. Due to our elevation, we’re not just plain ole south eastern US or eastern US. Thanks for any info!

710 Moose { 09.15.11 at 2:36 pm }

I live in Gillette Wyoming. High winds, and heavy snow are just part of life here. Best thing to do is prep for it. The only meat I have not pressure canned, is the neighbors dogs! My garden is mostly canned, or dehydrated already. I have plenty of lamp oil, propane, and bees wax stoves! My old ’78 dodge 4×4 has a new engine, and new tires! I say Bring it on!

711 Nicole { 09.15.11 at 12:02 pm }

Hi I’m from South Dakota and unfortunately these weather predictions are usually what we experience every winter for the last I don’t know how many years! Anyone that wants to experience a real winter come on over, most days we can’t even get out of our houses because of all of the snow! I love the farmer’s almanac!

712 Cheryl K. { 09.14.11 at 1:46 pm }

I hope your map is correct for Texas, we are in the worst drought I’ve ever seen and need rain deperately! Just trying to keep our animals fed is almost impossible. No grass or water!

713 Stacey Coyer { 09.14.11 at 10:53 am }

I live in Palmer, Ma and the amount of acorns that have already fallen and my dogs try to eat is an amaing amount!

We are planning a trip to Tyler,TX in early Nov and returning in late Nov. We will be leaving Seattle WA in mid October and traveling to SLC,UT for a week and then onto Texas. We are concerned about the return trip in the mid to latter part of November to Seattle. The mountain passes are unpredictable so we would like to know the best way to return to Seattle. Thank you

What about winter 2011-2012 for Chicago,IL?

730 Robin Sipe { 09.08.11 at 1:48 am }

Hi there, I am from Mount Airy, Maryland. I have been reading conflicting 2011-2012 Winter Weather reports. Some say heavy snow and colder than average tempsand others say above average precipitation with average temps. Hoping to have a 1-2 snowstorms with good sledding snow for kids…. what is your prediction for Maryland snowfall / snowstorms this winter?

731 Eric Scher { 09.07.11 at 6:03 pm }

I no longer live in St. Louis, MO but live in Anniston, Alabama now. I hope the farmers almanac is correct on the very mild winter. I hope we just have rain for our “very wet” winter.
I won’t miss shovelling snow!! I’m hoping for an early spring in 2012 but no F5 tornados!!
Alabama needs a long break from that.

732 Ashley { 09.07.11 at 2:22 pm }

What about Southwest Tennessee? Please say snow!

733 Ashley { 09.07.11 at 2:15 pm }

Hi! I live in the geographic center of Ohio (about 45 mins or 35 miles northeast of Columbus) and want to know about our area. I can’t tell where we actually fall on the map (blue or lighter blue). I love winter so I am hoping for snow…rain, not so much :)

Denver colorado??

748 Samantha { 09.05.11 at 12:42 am }

749 sher { 09.04.11 at 7:43 pm }

For the winter of 2011–12, the Farmers’ Almanac is forecasting “clime and punishment,”

says it all.

757 Sherry Fletcher { 09.02.11 at 12:45 pm }

Thank you!!! I think!?!?!?!

758 Mary { 09.02.11 at 12:40 pm }

I like the above normal temps (if I am reading the map correctly) but the stormy part not so much especially if the wet part includes freezing rain or ice. Would not look forward to another ice storm especially just getting through Irene. However, with that said I know you don’t control the weather so I will not hold it against you if your wrong!

759 julie Taylor { 09.02.11 at 11:32 am }

Hoping for rain and warmer temps in Maine this winter! We got pounded with snow last year!

760 amccuistion { 09.02.11 at 11:26 am }

I am in Alabama and I am liking the “very mild” winter! I can’t stand the cold weather! Good Job Farmer’s Almanac!!

761 Deb { 09.02.11 at 10:42 am }

In Oklahoma here. Definitely would like to see the very mild, very wet season! Hopefully will provide a better 2012 garden!

762 Valerie { 09.02.11 at 10:42 am }

I was really hoping for lots of snow again in Northwest Arkansas! I love to get snowed in for a few days of rest and relaxation!

763 Marjorie Volesky { 09.02.11 at 10:34 am }

Looks like the average for northern Kansas. Just let it get cold enough to kill all the bugs.,,

764 Alberta { 09.02.11 at 10:31 am }

I live in South Dakota, the land of extremes. I always say that we have 3 possibilities here…too hot, too cold and/or too windy. It is usually at least one of the 3 every day. The Farmers’ Almanac’s winter weather prediction does not surprise me and I’m pretty sure it will be very cold and above average snowfall. Gotta love winter weather extremes to live in South Dakota.

765 Bobby Dee { 09.02.11 at 10:28 am }

Hope we have cold weather for christmas

766 Ann { 09.01.11 at 9:25 pm }

What about Western Montana? Snowy or rainy? First snowfall anticipated?

767 Joel Bryan { 09.01.11 at 5:52 pm }

I live in central Iowa and your map shows “very wet” …..are you saying rain or that it could be in a variety of forms….rain, ice and snow? Snow I hope!

768 Jo { 09.01.11 at 4:28 pm }

Just wondering how the foot hills of nc will fair this year? We need a wet winter! If you can provide this, we would be thrilled. lol

769 shelley { 09.01.11 at 3:22 pm }

I live near Des Moines, and we had a real easy winter last year, so I was just wondering if we will have another easy winter this year?

770 Brandon Lade { 09.01.11 at 12:35 pm }

Demi, no need to worry! The forecast for Cleveland is average temps, not above average. And potentially snowy. See response to my own question about this below.

771 Amy { 09.01.11 at 12:14 pm }

Please, can you give us some feedback regarding north Texas? We are suffering a horrible heat wave, haven’t seen significant rain since Feb. and have record breaking temps over 105 daily. When will we see an end to the drought? There are acres and acres of fires now due every living plant and tree dying. Thanks!

772 jesse { 09.01.11 at 10:14 am }

need lots of heavy snow in pendleton oregon this year!!!!!!!!!!!! need a real winter

773 Demi { 09.01.11 at 9:12 am }

I’m from Cleveland – if I’m reading this correctly, because the temps will be higher than normal but with more precipitation, that means more rain! Ugh! We had over 50 days (out of 60) of rain last spring! Fingers crossed this is wrong!

774 Vickie Bowers { 09.01.11 at 8:35 am }

Hello there. I live in central Texas and would like to know the projected forecast for all of us down here please. As you know, we have experienced well over 70 days of over 100* days and no significant rainfall since Feb/March. Is there any relief in sight?!?! Your response is greatly appreciated! Thank you.

775 y.bell1927 { 09.01.11 at 7:20 am }

Bummer. I want a lot more snow for the mid-atlantic. I want another blizzard! :-(

776 Donna Garber { 09.01.11 at 5:27 am }

I’m in Joplin,Mo and hoping for no ice storms or blizzards .

777 Angela { 08.31.11 at 9:19 pm }

I live in West Michigan at the 1st hump. It says we will have normal temps, wet and white. Does that mean we’ll have lots of snow? I live about a mile from Lake Michigan and we get quite of bit of lake affect.

778 Allison { 08.31.11 at 7:34 pm }

I am not pleased to hear that we may not get the snow in NM like we need to help the spring runoff happen and fill up our lakes. We have had a dry year and just now enjoying some of the rain. I am hoping for the winter snows!

779 Ron McLaud { 08.31.11 at 7:15 pm }

I’m a truck driver in oswego ny just wondering how the roads will be this winter last year really sucked

780 Shawn { 08.31.11 at 7:15 pm }

Hello I live in Boone County Missouri east of the city of Columbia. I would like to know what kind of winter weather we can expect here for the 2011-2012 winter season. Also does winter folklore really work in predicting the future winter weather some people claim it does.

If so, do acorns predict the type of winter we’ll have? Aside from the trees surrounding the house, all of the other trees in the yard, woods and up the hill from the house are acorn trees and they are completely full of acorns.

We have more acorns in the acorn trees right now than we did last year, and we had a blizzard February 1st 2011 we had nearly 20 inches of snow and that was without thunderstorms. Any chance we may have thunderstorms with frozen precipitation like snow this winter season?

781 Berta { 08.31.11 at 7:11 pm }

okay what about SW Ohio? I am in Greenville…..will it be wet or snowy?

782 Krista { 08.31.11 at 5:32 pm }

791 Karen Salverson { 08.31.11 at 3:51 pm }

What about Northeastern Oregon??

792 Nat { 08.31.11 at 3:48 pm }

I’m from Northeastern Ohio. Just south of Cleveland, but north of Akron Canton. What can I expect this season?

793 F Harshaw { 08.31.11 at 3:47 pm }

How about central Tx? Everything is bypassing us especially rain

794 Paige { 08.31.11 at 3:24 pm }

How bad is it supposed to get in north east Texas?

795 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 3:16 pm }

Cindy – The U.P. will be very cold this winter with an average amount of snow.

796 Cindy { 08.31.11 at 2:36 pm }

What kind of weather for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for winter this year?

797 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 2:16 pm }

trcooper – Galoshes.

798 trcooper { 08.31.11 at 2:14 pm }

Seattle, Galoshes or snow boots?

799 Brandon Lade { 08.31.11 at 2:12 pm }

I hope I’ve ready my area (and your take on it correctly) – normal temperatures and normal-above normal snow. I’m from Cleveland, Ohio.

800 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 2:08 pm }

Sorry, Terri – We’re calling for it to be stormy and wet with mild temperatures.

801 Terri { 08.31.11 at 2:06 pm }

What Kind of Winter Weather will Virginia have? I’m thinking hoping Snow not a Mix .I Hate Ice

802 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 1:14 pm }

Hi Dolores, See my reply to Vicki below.

803 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 1:12 pm }

I’d say more rain, Jan, but there will still be snow.

804 Dolores Lara { 08.31.11 at 1:11 pm }

what kind of weater is in store for So. texas? we have had a horribly hot and extremly dry summer!

805 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 1:11 pm }

Average temperatures with slightly below average precipitation for Colorado, Suki. Still, Denver usually gets so much snow that a slight decrease won’t mean much, overall. There will still be plenty of snow.

806 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 1:07 pm }

Don’t hold your breath, Laurie. We’re expecting a mild, rainy winter for Alabama this year. Sorry.

807 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 1:06 pm }

Hopefully soon, Ronna. We predicted plenty of rain for September.

808 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 1:05 pm }

Vicki, that part of Oklahoma should be about average this year. Normal temperatures and precipitation.

809 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 1:05 pm }

Hi Vicki, We think Texas will be very mild and very wet. (Here’s hoping!)

810 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 1:04 pm }

Hi Delores, see my response to twalkersbabygirl and Sandy below.

811 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 1:00 pm }

Sorry, Heidi, Should be pretty snowy in Syracuse this year.

812 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 12:59 pm }

That’s right, Cindy, most of Massachusetts will see a mild winter this year.

813 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 12:58 pm }

Hi Barb,
If you’re a member of our site (it’s free to join), you can get up to four months of weather predictions on our long-range weather page. (If you’re not signed it, it only shows two). That’s the best place to see the answer to your question about which specific days are best for travel.

814 Jan { 08.31.11 at 12:51 pm }

Live in Bend, Or. will we have more rain or more snow this winter??

815 Suki { 08.31.11 at 12:24 pm }

What’re we looking at for the Denver, Aurora area in Colorado?

816 Laurie { 08.31.11 at 11:34 am }

what about northern alabama? last year we had a great winter…lots of snow…we want lots of snow again this winter.

817 omajayne { 08.31.11 at 11:31 am }

I totally trust my Farmers Almanac. I do my gardening, hair cuts, canning..you name it by the Almanac. Winter does not look so terribly bad for Va. Your prediction of Hurricne Irene was on dead center for the last of August for the East Coast. Thank you.

818 Ronna { 08.31.11 at 11:26 am }

I live in south-central Texas where the drought has been terrible. We have lost our yard and most of our shrubs, and are trying to save our trees. When can we expect the much needed rain?

819 Vicki landers { 08.31.11 at 11:23 am }

What will Winter be like in southwest Oklahoma

820 paula { 08.31.11 at 11:15 am }

Hello- traveling by car from Indy to Fl mid Dec – is one time better than another?

823 Heidi { 08.31.11 at 11:04 am }

I live in upstate NY, north of Syracuse on lake Ontario. How is our weather supposed to be? Light lake effect would be nice.

824 jo ann { 08.31.11 at 10:59 am }

how bout s.e. iowa? rain and mixed or lots of snow???

825 steven louton { 08.31.11 at 10:59 am }

I love my Farmer’s almanac, but I find your weather information is way to generalized and usually wrong.
But I will keep on buying for all the other great information and articles you carry.

826 cindy { 08.31.11 at 10:55 am }

live in the berkshires in nw corner of massachusets am i reading this right mild winter with more rain than snow???

827 Daniel Rackley { 08.31.11 at 10:51 am }

I live in central Oklahoma, and it has been abnormally dry for the past year or so. So, this winter should bring plenty of moisture (rain, sleet, snow…I don’t care, it all melts eventually)? And temps should be “mild”–as in not too cold, but still winter temps? I can deal with that!!

828 Tracy { 08.31.11 at 10:39 am }

I see you are predicting a “wetter than normal” winter for the Pacific Northwest. You were right on the money for a milder, warmer and very wet winter last year. I’m wondering if we’re likely to see more snow this year – and maybe a little less rain? Galoshes or snowshoes?

829 Mrs. Seal { 08.31.11 at 10:35 am }

What kind of weather will Maryland have this year? Hoping for LOTS of snow :)

830 Jerry { 08.31.11 at 10:32 am }

What about Omaha, NE? Lots of snow?

831 Heidi { 08.31.11 at 10:26 am }

absolutely sucks!! we live in colorado. DRY???

832 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 10:23 am }

Trish, see my answer to April, below.

833 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 10:20 am }

Spokane should see plenty of both – rain and snow.

834 steve { 08.31.11 at 10:16 am }

when you say wet in the spokane wa area, do you mean rain and not snow???

835 Trish { 08.31.11 at 10:13 am }

We just moved in March from Cen.FL to NE GA (Gainesville, GA area). Our 9 yr old an I have never seen snow. How likely are we to see some nice snowfall here this year? And about when is snow possible here?

836 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 10:10 am }

twalkersbabygirl and Sandy – Given we’re calling for average temperatures, and Missouri can get pretty cold, I’d say you should see plenty of snow this winter.

837 Sandy { 08.31.11 at 10:08 am }

I live in southwest Missouri (Springfield, Marshfield area) and it looks like we are on the border of everything. What do you think we are going to get?

838 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 10:07 am }

April, We expect mild weather for most of Georgia this winter. There should be snow in the mountains, and maybe a little dusting elsewhere, but nothing notable.

839 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 10:05 am }

Central Ill. – the entire state, actually – can expect average temps with plenty of snow.

840 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 10:05 am }

Karen,
Must be some other almanac, or a joke. We don’t mention 200 inches of snow for your area in ours.

841 Karen E { 08.31.11 at 10:01 am }

Ok, everywhere I turn in ND everyone keeps talking that they have heard from the Farmers Almanac that we are going to be slammed with 200 inches of snow this year. But, I have looked the book over inside and out and cannot find what they are talking about. Please tell me this is a joke. That is well over 16 feet of snow!!!! If there is any truth to this, I need to know so I can get my home stocked up so my happy butt can hibernate for the winter (and trust me, I would).

842 lconheady { 08.31.11 at 9:58 am }

How about Central Illinois, Clinton, Champaign and Decatur? What kind of winter can we expect?

843 Aimée { 08.31.11 at 9:57 am }

Yes! I am still considered in the above average temperature area! It looks like Topsham, Maine is going to not be so cold this year! YAY!!!

844 April { 08.31.11 at 9:56 am }

What about snow for North Georgia?

845 Brandon Lade { 08.31.11 at 9:56 am }

Near normal temperatures and plenty of snow? FTW! :) Thanks.

846 Jack { 08.31.11 at 9:53 am }

Never mind. You just answered Brandon above. Thanks!

847 Jack { 08.31.11 at 9:52 am }

I happen to be from Cleveland, Ohio along with the Brandon guy who’s posted some comments below. According to the map I’m in the “normal temps and snowy” part of Ohio on your map. I really love nice stormy winters even if temps are merely just average. Since I’m between two snowy areas – Buffalo and Indiana, I’m really hoping I’m included in the fun here. But if you could let me know what you officially forecast for Northern Ohio, just like you did for Indiana/Buffalo, it would still be very much appreciated.

848 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 9:51 am }

mcl95- Chicago should see average temperatures with plenty of snow.

849 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 9:50 am }

Brandon, we expect average temperatures and a lot of snow for Cleveland this year. I can’t speak to exact temperatures. Our forecasts are meant to be a basic overview.

850 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 9:48 am }

I think you’ll be happy this winter, eastendmama.

851 twalkersbabygirl { 08.31.11 at 9:48 am }

I live in the middle of Missouri and you are calling for very wet, is that mostly rain or mostly snow. Is there gong to be any heavy snow falls for Missouri this year?

852 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 9:47 am }

We expect an average amount of snowfall for Montana, Judy.

853 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 9:47 am }

Hi Laurie,
If you look at the map, you’ll see we’re calling for plenty of snow in western NY. Not to worry!

854 Laurie Nickerson { 08.31.11 at 9:44 am }

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! This cant be right,then why is there so many apple trees and nut trees bearing fruit as last year they had none.I NEED snow,I live in western Ny and snowmobiling is what we do in the winter!!!!

856 marie g Maroney { 08.31.11 at 9:18 am }

New England was very harsh last winter, snow storm after snow storm. Driveway was up to my neck. Does wetter conditions mean heavier snow? Marie in Connecticut.

857 Molly S { 08.31.11 at 9:17 am }

Could this mean an end to the drought for parts of TX and OK?

858 eastendmama { 08.31.11 at 8:57 am }

Will we see lots if snow this winter in the area of Augusta, ME? Sure hope so…we want to play!

859 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 8:39 am }

Should be about average in Western Montana this year. Fine skiing weather.

860 Jaime McLeod { 08.31.11 at 8:34 am }

We’re actually calling for a lot of snow over most of Indiana.

861 Deeter { 08.31.11 at 8:22 am }

So it looks like the exceptional drought in TX and OK are ending?? HOPE SO!

862 MercurialIN { 08.31.11 at 2:20 am }

Didn’t have much of a winter in Indy last year. Winter is my favorite season and I love big snowfalls, am I likely to be disappointed this winter too? Thank you.

863 Zack { 08.31.11 at 12:27 am }

PNW wetter than normal? Yep, we can handle it.

864 run2run { 08.31.11 at 12:01 am }

Loooove to ski in Western Montana…how’s it looking?

865 Karen { 08.30.11 at 10:49 pm }

I live in the far SW corner of Oklahoma. We are in severe heat and drought. Are you predicting a break in this horrible trend? Hoping for lots of moisture.

866 Brandon Lade { 08.30.11 at 5:36 pm }

Or alternatively, what are your thoughts for Cleveland? – you can use a similar brief summary just like you did for Buffalo, that would be fine.

867 Brandon Lade { 08.30.11 at 5:34 pm }

La Nina figured in or not, does your outlook say near normal temps and snowy for my area (Cleveland, OH)?

868 Debe { 08.30.11 at 2:21 pm }

What will the weather be like in the NW corner of Arkansas along the I-40 corridor and the Arkansas River Valley? Thanx

869 cindyluc { 08.30.11 at 10:03 am }

Planning a wedding on 19 May 2012. Any specific news for that date for Southern Maryland?

870 Jaime McLeod { 08.30.11 at 8:31 am }

La Nina is not figured into this forecast at all.

871 Alissa Verner { 08.30.11 at 12:47 am }

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!

872 Brandon Lade { 08.29.11 at 11:20 pm }

Just in general, should the conditions you described for Buffalo apply for Cleveland as well? I’m hoping you can agree I’m just far enough north and west to stay out of warm and rainy zones.

873 Brandon Lade { 08.29.11 at 11:18 pm }

I live in Cleveland, OH. On the map I see normal temperatures and snowy. Do you think temperatures will be within 1 degree F of normal and how much snow compared to normal would you expect?

874 Nathan { 08.29.11 at 11:13 pm }

Hello all! How about Cleveland? I live about 20 miles east and I plow. So a heads up would be awesome!

875 mcl95 { 08.29.11 at 7:34 pm }

What kind of weather will Chicago have this winter?

876 Mor Electric Heating Assoc., Inc. { 08.29.11 at 2:09 pm }

We would like to know what size of a La Nina was used when calculating this forecast (i.e. moderate.) Your forecast is similar to the other early forecasts we are seeing, however you have a smaller cold area and a bigger wet area.

877 Cate { 08.29.11 at 1:13 pm }

Wow. Thanks Jaime for the quick response! In other words, besides our lake effect snow we will also be in a favorable storm track for synoptic storms? Winter storms are the best!

878 Jaime McLeod { 08.29.11 at 1:08 pm }

Hi Cate, We’re expecting Buffalo to see average temperatures with a lot of snow this year.

879 Cate { 08.29.11 at 1:05 pm }

I am in Buffalo. How bad is it going to be for us?

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1910, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
