Well I'm liking the blue over...

Farmers’ Almanac right on with wet summer forecast

redumbrellaAs an exceptionally rainy summer continues to soak the Northeastern section of the United States, Farmers’ Almanac editor Peter Geiger is left biting his tongue.

“We hate to say ‘we told you so,’ but, in fact, we did,” notes Geiger.

A forecast calling for of several weeks of rain appeared in the 2009 edition of the Farmers’ Almanac, which was published last August. Since late May, some parts of the Northeast have gotten three times the normal amount of rainfall, with wet weather dominating two thirds of the days during the month of June.

That weather pattern was exactly what was forecasted in the 2009 Farmers’ Almanac, with entries for June and early July promising “showers and rain,” “showery weather persists,” “showers and thunderstorms,” and “heavy rainfall.”

Predictions for the coming weeks provide little hope for a light at the end of this long, soggy tunnel, with forecasts from mid July onward warning of heavy rains and a potential hurricane threat, “a brief respite from wet weather, then more heavy rain,” and “renewal of rainy, thundery conditions, followed by a surge of unseasonably cold air.”

Though predictions for August portend drier weather, colder than normal temperatures are expected to hang on, with a second hurricane threat possible at mid-month.

“There's at least one group of happy fellas, and those are the guys who make umbrellas,” quipped Geiger.

Hope it doesn't rain on July 15.
