Will Snowstorms Win Again?

Back in November, we asked you to vote on your favorite type of weather storm. Snowstorms won by a mile with more than 60% of the vote (summer thunderstorms came in 2nd place), but then again, that was before this winter’s weather set in. Will snowstorms win again?

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we were wondering what your ideal weather conditions would be for February 14th – Valentine’s Day. Would it be:

  • A Huge Snowstorm – giving you reason to stay inside, light a fire, cuddle, and/or do snow stuff with the kids?
  • A Warmer than Average Sunny Day - so you can go out and take a walk or just enjoy some nice weather outdoors.
  • Windy - so that someone special could sweep you off your feet?

Memorable Valentine’s Day Weather of the Recent Past
Do you remember the February 2007 Valentine's Day Blizzard? Many a Valentine went without a gift due to the stormy weather and inability to get to the store for a present or candy. This blizzard was a massive winter storm that affected most of the eastern half of North America starting on February 12, 2007, and peaking on Valentine's Day, February 14. This Valentine’s storm produced heavy snowfalls across the Midwest from Nebraska to Ohio, as well as parts of the northeastern United States, and up into Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. The southern Ohio Valley received significant sleet and freezing rain.

The southern portion of the storm produced severe thunderstorms and numerous tornadoes. One tornado hit a subdivision of New Orleans that was still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina. In total, this storm system was responsible for 37 deaths across 13 U.S. states and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec. The NOAA classified the storm as a Category 3 major storm.
