Our Pets & Winter… Texas Weather
Here is a reaction to my last blog on goosebones and winter:
“for once i would like too hear you talk about the the weather for DEC and January. In Texas.”
The goosebone folklore came from the Mid West (100 years ago) and was probably applicable to all parts of the country including Texas. It is possible that everyone doesn’t realize that you can get weather for any of 7 regions of the US and most parts of Canada by going to our website and clicking weather. I don’t usually talk specifically about what we are calling for because it is online and in the 2009 edition. If you want to know what we say for Texas in December and January, go to our site www.farmersalmanac.com and check out zone 5.
With the onslaught of winter weather, those of us in the North need to give special care for our pets. Here is a question from one of the countries coldest states:
I live in mid-Michigan, I recently have become a caretaker of my sons 2 dogs and several cats. My Question is……What is the best way to keep them all warm in the winter? They have shelter in our garage. The dogs have access to the outdoors and so do the cats. I am just so worried about them freezing to death. Please advise me on proper bedding materials for them all. Thank You so very much, I have been so worried about them, with winter now upon us. Patricia
It is good to worry about your cats and dogs. Just because they carry a fur coat with them doesn’t make them impervious to bitter cold temperatures. I know that living in Michigan can be a shock to the system of any animal. I don’t know what your garage and home look like. Bum if the garage is not heated and has a cement floor (as most do), then you’ll have to bring the animals inside. Do you have a basement or area that would be warm but not allow them to roam around??
My assistant does have animals and tells me that if allow them to roam in the bitter cold, it could cause arthritis or death. So, to answer your question, the best way is to keep the animals indoors during the coldest months. Or, maybe you could find a portable heater to bring the temperature in the garage or basement to a livable level. If they are sleeping on a cold floor, make sure their bedding is insulated. During the Christmas season there are some great deals on pet supplies. Make sure they have plenty of water and a warm place to go.
