Holy Hurricane!
Hurricane Lili raised the roof – right off this couple’s church!
Nicole & Glen Bruce - Reeves, Louisiana

Church Point, LA - March 29, 2003
When Glen and I first chose our wedding date, we settled on March 29, 2003. But I was so excited, I asked Glen how he would feel about moving our date up. He agreed. We decided on October 5, 2002, and got to work setting the whole nine yards up.

Come late September, though, we heard warnings of a hurricane forming, Hurricane Lili! About two days before our special day, someone made a joke about the hurricane taking the church roof off. No more than four hours after the comment was made, I received a phone call from my mom and dad, informing me that Hurricane Lili had indeed hit Richard, Louisiana – the town in which we were to be married – and collapsed the roof of the church we were getting married in!

We decided not to let that stop us, though, and proceeded with our wedding, despite having no priest, no church and barely any guests. We were married by a justice of the peace – who we were almost unable to find – in the same hall where our reception was scheduled. Even that was a struggle; we had trouble tracking down with the man who had the key to the hall. It was still raining outside, and there was no electricity anywhere. Generators provided us with some lights and fans, but otherwise, we had no electricity and no food. We served chips, dip, drinks, and cake. We all had our attire. And to top it all off, the wedding began at 5 p.m., and the town was under an 8 p.m. curfew. Of course, the electricity returned right as we were walking out the door to go home.
