Tickfaw, LA - September 24, 2005
Having grown up around in Southern Louisiana, I'd always dreamed of having a beautiful New Orleans wedding. But about three weeks prior to my wedding Hurricane Katrina struck the city, and from that point on the wedding I planned was over. My family was scattered all across the country, and New Orleans was a disaster area. The reception hall, the church, the photographers, and the bakery were all flooded, and it was impossible to get in touch with any of them.

Then, when the day of my wedding, September 24, 2005, came, it just happened to be the day that Hurricane Rita hit Louisiana. Though we were far enough away that we didn't receive a direct hit, we still suffered the effects. I woke up the morning of my wedding and went to get my hair done, but the hairdresser was closed, because they, like most businesses, did not have electricity. I finally managed to find one hairdresser that was open and able to style my hair.

We got married that day in a small church in a tiny place called Tickfaw, LA. And though most of the 250 people I'd invited to my wedding weren't able to attend, I was blessed to be able to have the most important 15 people of my life there. We got married with the hurricane raging outside. After the wedding, my family and I went back to my two-bedroom apartment to have cake and appetizers in the dark, because our electricity had still not returned.

My husband and I had planned to take a cruise for our honeymoon, but we had to wait until October to take it, because of the hurricanes. When we finally went on our cruise, Hurricane Wilma hit Mexico, causing problems for us on our honeymoon.

It has been two and half years since we got married, but my husband and I just have to look back and laugh. We always say that if two hurricanes couldn't keep us apart, nothing can.
