Wet, wet, wedding! A Flood of the Century turned their wedding bash into wedding bath!
Christian & Carrie Staehly - LaCrescent, Minnesota
My wife and I were married on the day of the disastrous floods that swept through southeast Minnesota last summer. It rained from the time we got up that morning through the next morning. A digital rain gauge measured 19 inches near where our outdoor reception took place. The band never got to play, and we literally had rivers running through our tents.
Though there was only a four-inch gap between tents, it rained so hard that when people walked between tents it looked like they had jumped into a swimming pool. Carrie's wedding dress was covered in mud for almost a full foot up the skirt. We had to shuttle people to a higher road just to get them back to town.
Numerous guests of the wedding got stranded at strangers' houses because they were trapped between mudslides. One of the members of our wedding party was crossing a bridge when it washed out. Luckily, his car became wedged in the guardrail. He sat on the roof of his car for a couple of hours before deciding, after numerous rescue attempts, to shinny down the guardrail to safety.
They say that it is good luck to have it rain on your wedding, and we figure the 19 inches of luck went into our friends and family making it home with no one being killed. We made the best of it, and we will never forget our wedding on the 100-year flood! |
