As of today, there are 39 days until spring! However, looking out my window, spring seems far away. We’ve had a lot of snow this year as have many other places, and the even more unusual aspect of all this snow, is that it’s stayed on the ground for nearly a month. I don’t recall the last time New Jersey had snow last this long. There is not one spot in my yard that is not snow covered.
So what does snow have to do with gardens? Well there is a weather lore that states “ A Year of snow, crops will grow,” but is that really true? Last year we ran a story about the reasoning behind this. Be sure to check out Is All This Snow Good for the Garden for the reasoning behind this proverb and belief.
This winter’s tough weather makes for a good time to take time out from your busy, every day life to plan and sketch gardens. Seed catalogs are starting up and will be mailed shortly. Why not use this time of year to plan your garden? Or if you’ve never planted a garden, why not plan a small one this year even if it’s container gardening on your patio.
Nothing tastes better than homegrown vegetables. Or try some herbs and dry them so next year when you’re looking out your window at all that snow on your lawn, you can sip some homemade, homegrown herbal tea from your garden.
Spring is coming! 39 days and counting…have you planned your garden yet? Share your ideas here.
