Summer Means . . .

Summer officially starts today, June 20, 2012, but not until 7:09 EDT. Summer means many things to many people, but here is what comes to mind immediately when I think of summer….

Fireflies… there is something magical about an insect that doesn’t bite, AND has a light that lights up the dark sky. Lightning bugs/fireflies are fun to watch and even more fun to catch if you have small children to do this with.

Water … to drink, to swim in, and use to keep your gardens alive. Summer makes me realize how important water is, and how we all need to conserve it from time to time. I love to be by the water — ocean, lake, creek, or pool — during the summer, and can also appreciate how wonderful a cold glass of water tastes on a really hot day.

Ice Cream …I like dessert but can usually say no to ice cream … except in the summer when the local soft serve ice cream places open up. I enjoy taking the kids out for an ice cream cone — preferably with rainbow sprinkles — on a warm summer evening.

Outdoors … there’s something so inviting about a sunny day with a blue sky. In the summer there’s so much more daylight to take advantage of, but even on warm nights, the idea of sitting on a deck or patio, perhaps with Tiki torches or a campfire, is such a nice change from the every day routine of running errands or sitting on the couch watching TV.

Vacation … who doesn’t like to take a little time off from work, chores, or every day routines? Whether you go so somewhere far or nowhere, the summer to most means a time to take some time off from the regular routine, to refresh and revive.

What does summer mean to you? Share your thoughts here, maybe as you eat an ice cream and plan your vacation! Happy Summer Solstice!

My summer means air conditioner. Today it is a scorcher so keep cool out there! When I think about summer i think of July 4th and sitting out on our porch chairs with the family. We make homemade ice cream and watch fireworks, gotta love summer nights! I also love being by the water but I have to stock up on that sunscreen because I burn too easily. Happy Summer!! Have fun while it lasts because summer has to end sometime(unfortunately)

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1919, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
