Last evening at 7:12 p.m., parts of Maine and New England felt the wrath of an earthquake. At 4.0M, it was mild, but rattled a few people. The faults in this part of the country were formed 400 million years ago. It is rare for us to feel a quake, and this one lasted only a few seconds with little to no damage. Most people thought it was a train, furnace exploding or other mundane explanation. While I was having dinner at a local restaurant and felt nothing, people in a nearby building said their building swayed.
My immediate thought was about an article we published in 2007 about how pets can predict earthquakes. On the way to work, I spoke with several pet owners. The consensus was that many pets and livestock animals did act “odd.” One woman said her dog started to run in a circle in the living room. Another bounced off the couch seconds before. If you have a pet and have experienced an earthquake, did your cat or dog give you an indication of what was to come??
