Ever dream of life without meetings, deadlines, or schedules? Last week I took some time off from work and really didn’t do too much. Well that is after the cleaning, cooking, wrapping, entertaining and cleaning again was over. It was kind of nice waking up and not “having” to leave or arrive at a certain time for anything. I set my own schedule, stayed up late, slept in, and didn’t feel rushed or hurried.
But now it’s back to reality. Work, schedules, kids’ schedules, bills … routine. I’ve never been a real routine person but do like to accomplish things I set out to do. Sometimes I find it hard thought to shut off that guilt voice in my head that says “you should be doing something” when I try to do nothing. That’s why I choose to leave my home for summer vacations so the voice that nags me to do chores stays home, and I can vacation voice-free. But the week after Christmas is like a free pass, to take a few days to relax and enjoy life without schedules.
I often wonder how many days it would take before I found life without schedules to be boring? When my dad retired a few years ago, I know he enjoyed not having to get up and head to work for about two weeks, then he kind of was at a loss for what to do. Fortunately he has found hobbies he didn’t know he liked and the grandchildren keep him busy — he even got his first cell phone after he retired!
What type of person are you? Do you thrive on schedules and routines? Or do you prefer to set your own? I guess really the answer is a little of both in my case.
