Earl Grey Shortbread Cookies

If you’re a fan of the citrusy scent and flavor of Earl Grey tea, you’ll love these buttery, delicious cookies to enjoy with your favorite cuppa!

Earl Grey Shortbread Cookies

1 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
1 tablespoon Earl Grey tea leaves (dried leaves)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon water
1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick), at room temperature

Preheat oven to 375° F. Place all dry ingredients in a food processor and pulse until the tea becomes a fine powder. Add vanilla, water, and butter, and blend until the mixture becomes doughy. Place the dough on a piece of wax paper or parchment and roll it into a log until smooth. Chill for 30 minutes, then cut the log into 1/3 inch slices. Place the slices on baking sheets and bake until the edges are just brown, about 12 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool on the sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks. Cool completely, and enjoy.

    It’s best to add the tea leaves to the butter and let sit at least an hour for the oils in the butter to absorb the tea flavours. This helps greatly with imparting the tea flavour into the cookies. I hope this helps! 🙂

    I gave tried several recipes for earl grey cookies. Cannot get the flavor of the tea to come through. Even tried grinding the leaves smaller and steeping in a bit of boiling water. No luck. Any suggestions?

  • If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1919, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
