Garden Slaw

1 small onion, sliced and separated into rings
1/2 medium cabbage, chopped
2 medium stalks celery, chopped (1 cup)
1 medium carrot, shredded (1/2 cup)
1 medium zucchini, sliced
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup vinegar
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp. celery seed
1/2 tsp. dry mustard
Pepper to taste

Reserve a few onion rings. Mix the rest of the onion rings with the cabbage, celery, carrot, and zucchini. Heat remaining ingredients to boiling; boil, stirring, for 1 minute. Toss over vegetables. Refrigerate for 4 hours, stirring occasionally. Garnish with reserved onion rings.

If you notice a hole in the upper left-hand corner of your Farmers' Almanac, don't return it to the store! That hole isn't a defect; it's a part of history. Starting with the first edition of the Farmers' Almanac in 1818, readers used to nail holes into the corners to hang it up in their homes, barns, and outhouses (to provide both reading material and toilet paper). In 1919, the Almanac's publishers began pre-drilling holes in the corners to make it even easier for readers to keep all of that invaluable information (and paper) handy.
