In Maine, we know how to celebrate. We honor the lobster, the wild blueberry, the Kennebunk dump, and on June 26, Maine is declaring it “Whoopie Pie Day”. Rumor has it that the origins of the whoopie pie are in Lewiston, while others say it is somewhere in Massachusetts or Pennsylvania. Nonetheless, the absolute best whoopie pies are made and sold in the great state of Maine.
Labadie’s Bakery in the downtown Lewiston has been making whoopie pies since at least 1925 and possibly 1918. Possibly the greatest whoopie pie of all time is made by Wicked Whoopies (Isamax Snacks). The owner was on Oprah Winfrey, and the rest is history. Essentially, a whoopie pie is a chocolate cake with filling made of cream cheese frosting, French vanilla, peppermint, chocolate, peanut butter…you name it, it can be a filling. The classic whoopie is made with Marshmallow Fluff.
If you have never seen or heard of a whoopie pie, I encourage you to either go to the Isamax Website or check your local store. I understand that good news travels, and you may in fact have some in your own backyard. If you are a whoopie fanatic, or have a whoopie story, please feel free to share it with all of us.
