Preheat oven to 350° F.
Grease and flour a 9” cake pan or loaf pan. In a medium bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
Combine the flour, baking powder and salt.
Add the dry ingredients gradually, alternating with the milk.
If the batter is too stiff, add up to two tablespoons of additional milk.
Spread the batter evenly into the pan and bake for about 30 minutes in the preheated oven, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about an hour before turning it out onto a serving plate.
Dust with powdered sugar.
