Farmers’ Almanac and Groundhog Concur: Winter is here to Stay!

On Monday, February 2, 2009, two very famous groundhogs – Punxsutawney Phil and Wiarton Willie (of Canada) came out of their burrows to offer their outlook for the remaining days of winter. It came as no surprise to the Farmers’ Almanac, which released a “numbingly cold” winter outlook last August, that the groundhogs saw their shadows, which means 6 more weeks of winter weather.

This winter has been a tough one for many with bitterly cold temperatures, ice storms, and lots of snow. But for those of you who read the Farmers’ Almanac, you knew it was going to be a tough one.

According to Farmers’ Almanac’s weather prognosticator Caleb Weatherbee,
“Cold temperatures will once again invade many areas of the country, including southeastern states mid to late February. The northeast looks like it's in line for a very wet, icy, and snowy February with a few big storms predicted mid-month.”

The Midwest and Great Lakes will continue to be reminded of winter with many cold days predicted, as well as that four-letter word – S N O W.

If you’re heading to the North Central areas of the country for some skiing, dress warmly, as spring is at least six weeks away, if not more. Only the southwestern states may see some mild temperatures come the end of February.

The good news? Skiing and ice fishing may be good through March!
