See a Teal Pumpkin on a Porch This Halloween? Here’s What It Means
If you spot a teal pumpkin among the orange jack-o’-lanterns this Halloween, it isn’t just decoration.
It signals that the house has non-food treats available for trick-or-treaters.
The Teal Pumpkin Project, created by Food Allergy Research & Education, helps make Halloween more inclusive for children with food allergies and others who may not be able to safely enjoy the usual candy bowl.
A teal pumpkin doesn’t mean every piece of candy at that house is allergy-safe. It means there’s another option.
What Do You Hand Out?

Non-food treats can be simple and inexpensive: glow sticks, stickers, pencils, spider rings, bubbles, mini notepads, or other small Halloween favors. FARE has a longer list of non-food treat ideas.
You can still hand out candy too. Just keep food and non-food treats in separate containers so kids can choose.
That small distinction matters for families who otherwise have to inspect every wrapper before a child can enjoy what they collected.
Why Teal?

Teal is the color associated with food-allergy awareness, and the pumpkin became a visible way for participating homes to identify themselves.
You don’t even need to paint a real pumpkin. FARE offers printable Teal Pumpkin Project signs that can go on a door or window.
The key is putting it somewhere trick-or-treaters can see before they reach the candy bowl.
There’s a Map, Too
Families looking for participating homes can use the Teal Pumpkin Project map to find locations offering non-food treats.
If you plan to participate, adding your home or event to the map makes the gesture much more useful. A teal pumpkin helps once families reach your porch; the map helps them know where to go.
A Small Halloween Gesture That Means a Lot
The Teal Pumpkin Project doesn’t ask anyone to give up Halloween candy. It simply adds another choice.
Put out a teal pumpkin or sign, keep a few non-food treats beside the candy bowl, and you’ve made your porch easier for more children to enjoy.
So if you see a teal pumpkin this Halloween, now you know: there’s something in that bowl for kids who may need a different kind of treat.
