Every October the same question shows up in reader mail: where should we go for fall foliage that is not New England? We already ran the original list and readers pushed back with regions we missed, especially Michigan. So we built a second list. These are 6 fall foliage destinations across the mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Appalachia, the Ozarks, and the Pacific Northwest that reliably deliver the reds, oranges, and golds without the New England crowds. Peak windows are noted for every stop so you can plan the weekend, not just the season.

Pack the family, dust off your camera lenses, and hit the road.

When Fall Foliage Actually Peaks Across These Regions

Fall color is driven by three things: shortening daylight, cool nights, and dry days. Sugar maples, aspens, and dogwoods each turn on their own clock. The USA National Phenology Network has tracked first-color dates for two decades and shows that in the northern US, peak now arrives roughly a week later than it did in the 1990s. That means October travel windows are more forgiving on the front end, but you cannot rely on Columbus Day weekend the way older guidebooks suggested. Check park webcams and state DNR foliage reports in the week before you drive.

6 Great Fall Foliage Destinations

Big Pocono State Park, Pennsylvania

Fall foliage over Big Pocono State Park, Pennsylvania, one of six fall foliage destinations covered in this guide.

Near Tannersville, Pennsylvania, Big Pocono is a magnet for leaf hounds. This 1,300-acre park sits on top of Camelback Mountain in the Pocono range. The scenic drive climbs to a summit overlook that gives you dozens of miles of color in every direction. You do not have to stop at the park boundary either. The wider Pocono region, running southwest and north of Big Pocono State Park, is packed with fall color, and you can view it by horse, plane, train, zip line, or chairlift. If you cannot get to Pennsylvania in person, pull up one of the region’s live webcams. Plan your adventure here. Peak Viewing Times: 1st to 3rd Week of October.

Mohican State Park, Ohio

Start on the southern side of Mohican State Park at the fire tower. You climb several stories above the ground and look out across a sweeping, tree-covered vista. Then get back in the car and drive up through the park, following tree-lined roads toward the Mohican Gorge and the gorge overlook, one of the highest points in the park. Step out onto the overlook and the entire gorge lies below, the Clear Fork River winding through the color. From there, drop down to the gorge floor, cross the restored historic covered bridge, and you have miles of forested riverbank trail to picnic or hike.

If you make the trip to Mohican, do not skip nearby Malabar Farm State Park, once owned by author Louis Bromfield. Or drive half an hour to an hour east along the Ohio Scenic Byways to see Amish Country in full fall color. Plan your adventure here. Peak Viewing Times: 1st to 3rd Week of October.

River Road National Forest Scenic Byway, Michigan

When we published the first list of top fall foliage destinations, Michigan readers asked, fairly, why the state got skipped. On a second look, “Pure Michigan” gives New England a real run for its money. Our pick is the River Road National Scenic Byway, a 23.4-mile stretch that runs from the shores of Oscoda along Lake Huron into the Huron-Manistee National Forest. It meanders across the first few fingers of the “mitten” and traces the Au Sable River the whole way. A must-see along the route is Foote Pond Overlook, sometimes called Eagles Nest Overlook because eagle sightings are common, with views over the river and Foote Pond (created by the Foote Dam). It is blue sky, blue water, and the bright red of sugar maple against the gold of aspen. Plan your visit here. Peak Viewing Times: 1st to 3rd Week of October.

Grandview, New River Gorge National River, West Virginia

Grandview overlook at New River Gorge National Park, West Virginia, in peak late-October fall foliage.

In West Virginia, one of the most picturesque places to view fall foliage is at the New River Gorge National River, especially near the New River Gorge Bridge. If you are feeling brave, you can stand atop the 3,000-foot bridge and look down nearly 900 feet to the bottom of the gorge. The bridge opens for pedestrian traffic on the third Saturday of October (Bridge Day), and visitors can call ahead to arrange a guided catwalk tour under the bridge deck. Other areas of the park have trails and scenic overlooks. Adventure seekers can also raft the New River itself. Plan your trip here. Peak Viewing Times: 4th Week of October.

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park, Missouri

For a fall foliage experience that stands apart, Dogwood Canyon Nature Park in the Ozarks is worth the drive. There is an admission fee ($10 per adult) but the scenery is worth it. Trails run along sheer rock walls topped with colorful trees. Waterfalls turn up around every bend. Beyond hiking, visitors can ride horses through the park, go biking, or take tram and Segway tours. When you have worked up an appetite from all that leaf peeping, the park’s on-site restaurant lets you take in the fall colors and waterfalls right from the dining room.

Dogwood Canyon sits inside a much larger natural reserve that also includes nearby Pilot Knob Conservation Area and Roaring River State Park, so you can string together a weekend of the same country. Plan your adventure here. Peak Viewing Times: Last Week of October and 1st Week of November.

Mount Hood Scenic Loop, Oregon

Mount Hood Scenic Loop, Oregon, framed by peak-week fall foliage along the Columbia River route.

If you are in the mood to road trip, the Mount Hood Scenic Loop belongs on your fall foliage list. The trip starts in Portland and drops you onto Interstate 84 along the Columbia River, with Mount Hood visible to the south. Head right on State Route 35 and you circle to the south of the mountain, eventually meeting State Route 26, which delivers you back to Portland. The 146-mile route is tree-lined the whole way, with plenty of pull-offs to camp, picnic, eat, or hike. Plan your trip here. Peak Viewing Times: 3rd and 4th Weeks of October.

How to Time Your Trip So You Actually Hit Peak

  • Two weeks out: check the state DNR foliage report and the park’s live webcam (Poconos and Ohio DNR both maintain them).
  • One week out: pull the long-range weather forecast for the specific park and shift the weekend by one if a warm, wet system is sitting overhead. Warm and rainy dulls the reds fast.
  • Two days out: pack layers. Peak leaf weekends run 30 to 65 F day to night at most of these elevations.
  • Day of: shoot photos in the first two hours after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. Midday sun flattens the color.

Fall Foliage Destinations FAQ

When is the best week overall to see fall foliage across the US in 2026?

For most of the parks on this list, the sweet spot is October 6 to October 25, 2026. Big Pocono, Mohican, and Michigan’s River Road peak in the 1st to 3rd week of October. West Virginia and Oregon peak in the 3rd or 4th week. Dogwood Canyon in the Ozarks runs latest, into the first week of November.

How do I know if peak color has shifted this year?

Two signals worth trusting: the USA National Phenology Network first-color map, and your state DNR foliage report (Pennsylvania DCNR, Ohio DNR, and Michigan DNR all publish weekly updates through October). A hot, dry September usually pulls peak forward. A warm, wet September pushes it back and dulls the reds. Check both a week before you leave.

Which of these fall foliage destinations is best for a family with young kids?

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park in Missouri is the most kid-friendly on this list. Waterfalls, easy trails, an on-site restaurant, and tram or Segway tours mean nobody has to hike hard to see the color. Big Pocono is a close second because the summit overlook is a short drive from the parking lot.

Is Michigan actually a good alternative to New England for fall color?

Yes. Michigan’s sugar maple and aspen mix on the River Road National Scenic Byway rivals Vermont most years, and the crowds are a fraction of the size. The 23.4-mile stretch along the Au Sable River peaks in the 1st to 3rd week of October, same window as the classic Vermont leaf weekend.

What if I miss peak week?

Slide south or later on the map. If Big Pocono is already past by the time you can travel, drop down to Grandview at New River Gorge (peaks the 4th week of October) or Dogwood Canyon in the Ozarks (peaks into the first week of November). Elevation matters too. Higher elevations peak first.

Do I need a permit or fee for any of these parks?

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park charges $10 per adult admission. New River Gorge is a National Park and does not charge day-use entry. The state parks in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan are free to enter, though some have per-vehicle fees at popular overlooks. Check each park’s site before you go.

Can I see fall foliage without leaving my house?

Yes. The Pocono Mountains region maintains a set of live webcams, and most state DNRs (Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia) run seasonal cameras through their tourism offices from mid-September through early November. It is not the same as standing on the ridge, but it is a good way to time your trip.

You really must see the drive through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Northern Wisconsin. It is by far the most amazing blaze of color you will ever experience.

Hi Stacy, The Great Smoky Mountains made it to our first list (the opening paragraph tells you we had our first list and had to develop a second!). Here’s that article for your information: https://www.farmersalmanac.com/best-places-fall-leaf-color
