Day and Night Are Not Equal on the Equinox: Here Is Your Real Equal Day

Fall arrived at 8:05 p.m. Eastern, Tuesday, September 22. That is the instant the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading south, and it happens at the same moment everywhere. Only the clock on your wall differs: 7:05 p.m. in Chicago, 6:05 in Denver, 5:05 on the West Coast, 4:05 in Anchorage.

You will read every September that day and night are equal on the equinox. They are not, and they were not for several days afterwards.

Why the Equinox Is Not the Equal Day

The word equinox promises equal night, and the arithmetic almost delivers. Two things get in the way, and both of them add daylight rather than take it away.

• We measure from the edge, not the middle. Sunrise is counted the instant the first sliver clears the horizon, and sunset the instant the last sliver leaves. That hands you a few extra minutes at each end.
• The air bends the light. The atmosphere refracts sunlight around the curve of the Earth, so you can see the Sun while it is still geometrically below the horizon. You watch it rise before it is up and set after it is down.

Together those add roughly 8 to 14 minutes of daylight on the equinox itself, more the further north you are. The genuinely equal day, which astronomers call the equilux, arrives a few days later once the Sun has moved far enough south to cancel the bonus out.

The pattern is tidy once you see it. Anchorage reaches its equal day on September 24, the northern tier on the 25th, the middle of the country on the 26th, and Florida not until the 27th. Nearer the equator the Sun climbs at a shallower angle, so it takes longer to give back those extra minutes.
