When Should You Cover Your Air Conditioner for Winter—If at All?

Before you put a cover over your outdoor unit, check whether it also heats your home. The right winter care depends on your equipment—and a tightly wrapped cover can create problems.

As patio furniture goes into storage and garden hoses come inside, it’s tempting to give the air conditioner the same treatment. Surely a cover will help it survive winter?

Sometimes protection makes sense. But an outdoor air conditioner, a heat pump, and a window unit need different care. Before buying a cover, identify your equipment and read its instructions.

Should You Cover Your Air Conditioner for Winter?

Most cooling-only central air conditioners do not need a full winter cover. Heat pumps used for heating must remain open to airflow. Window air conditioners may be stored or protected according to their manufacturer’s directions. Lennox.com

Lennox’s winter-cover guidance explains that modern outdoor AC units are built for exposure to weather. Protection may help where falling leaves or debris pose a particular problem, but wrapping the entire unit can introduce other risks.

The first question is whether your outdoor equipment is taking the winter off—or getting ready for its busiest season.

Know Which Kind of Equipment You Have

Central Air Conditioner

A cooling-only outdoor unit may sit idle while a separate furnace heats the house. That makes seasonal protection an option in some circumstances, rather than an automatic requirement.

Ask your installer whether the unit’s location creates a specific debris problem and what protection, if any, the manufacturer permits.

Heat Pump

A heat pump can look much like a central air conditioner, but its outdoor unit works during heating season.

Ductless Mini-Split

Why the Wrong Cover Can Cause Problems

According to Lennox, an unsuitable full cover can:

• Trap moisture, encouraging rust and corrosion.
• Reduce ventilation, creating conditions for mold and mildew.
• Provide shelter for rodents and other small animals.
