Best Days Calendar: Best Days by the Moon | Farmers’ Almanac

What Is the Farmers’ Almanac Best Days Calendar?

For more than 200 years, the Farmers’ Almanac Best Days Calendar has helped readers choose favorable dates for everyday activities based on traditional lunar timing.

Our Best Days are determined using a long-standing formula that considers the phase of the Moon, the Moon’s position in the zodiac, and other traditional factors. According to this tradition, certain combinations are considered more favorable for planting, harvesting, fishing, cutting hair, performing outdoor chores, setting eggs, weaning, traveling, hosting celebrations, and many other activities.

Think of it as an old-fashioned guide for timing your activities with the Moon.

Use the calendar above to find the Best Days for today, this week, and the coming months.

Best Days for Parenting

We love hearing from our readers, especially those who have experienced success with our calendars. Recently, one of the greatest responses was from our parenting community who found the Best Days for weaning and potting training especially helpful! Here is a testimonial from Haley in Tennessee, via TikTok.

How Are Farmers’ Almanac Best Days Calculated?

The Farmers’ Almanac has included lunar and zodiac-based timing information since its earliest editions.

Two important pieces of the Best Days formula are:

1. The phase of the Moon

The Moon moves through a repeating cycle from New Moon to Full Moon and back again. Traditionally, waxing and waning phases have been associated with different types of activities.

Learn more about the Moon phases and how they work, or check the current Moon phase calendar.

2. The Moon’s position in the zodiac

As the Moon travels around Earth, it appears to pass through the 12 signs of the zodiac. In traditional almanac lore, different zodiac signs have long been associated with particular qualities, plants, activities, and parts of the body.

See where the Moon is today with our Zodiac Calendar.

These traditions have been passed down through generations of farmers, gardeners, outdoorsmen, and Almanac readers. They should be viewed as traditional guidance rather than a guarantee of results.

What Can You Find in the Best Days Calendar?

The Best Days Calendar covers far more than gardening. Depending on the month and lunar conditions, you can find recommended dates for dozens of activities.

Gardening and Harvesting

Look for favorable days to:

  • Plant and transplant
  • Kill plant pests
  • Mow to encourage or slow growth
  • Prune
  • Pick apples and pears
  • Dry fruits and vegetables
  • Harvest crops

If gardening is your main interest, also use our Planting Calendar: Gardening by the Moon, which provides more detailed guidance for planting and garden chores.

You can also learn more about the tradition in our guide to Gardening by the Moon.

Fishing

Generations of anglers have paid attention to the Moon when deciding when to head to the water.

Our dedicated Fishing Calendar combines lunar information with Farmers’ Almanac tradition to identify Best, Good, Fair, and Poor fishing days, along with recommended morning or evening periods.

Remember that local weather, tides, water temperature, barometric pressure, and fish behavior can be just as important as lunar timing.

Outdoor and Farm Chores

Traditional Best Days include dates for activities such as:

  • Cutting firewood
  • Digging holes
  • Mowing
  • Painting
  • Setting eggs
  • Farm and livestock chores
  • Picking fruit
  • Preserving food

For gardeners and homesteaders, the calendar can serve as a simple monthly planning tool.

Hair and Personal Care

One of the most popular Best Days traditions involves cutting hair according to the Moon.

The calendar identifies dates traditionally considered favorable for:

  • Cutting hair to encourage growth
  • Cutting hair to slow growth
  • Certain personal-care activities

These recommendations are based on traditional lunar lore rather than medical or scientific guidance.

Parenting Traditions

Farmers’ Almanac readers have long consulted the Best Days Calendar for traditional dates associated with:

  • Weaning
  • Potty training
  • Other family milestones

Every child develops differently, so these dates are intended as a fun Almanac tradition rather than medical or developmental advice.

Celebrations, Travel, and Everyday Life

You may also find Best Days for:

  • Hosting a party
  • Getting married
  • Traveling for pleasure
  • Buying a home
  • Asking for a loan
  • Cooking and baking
  • Beginning certain projects

That variety is one reason the Best Days Calendar has remained one of the most enduring features of the Farmers’ Almanac.

Best Days and Gardening by the Moon

Gardening by the Moon is one of the oldest traditions associated with lunar calendars.

A common rule of thumb is that the waxing Moon, when illumination is increasing, has traditionally been associated with growth above the ground, while the waning Moon has often been associated with roots, pruning, harvesting, and other below-ground or maintenance work.

The full Farmers’ Almanac system is more detailed because it considers both the lunar phase and the Moon’s zodiac position.

For specific planting recommendations, visit the Farmers’ Almanac Planting Calendar.

Do Moon Phases Really Affect Everyday Activities?

The Moon unquestionably influences Earth in measurable ways—most famously through ocean tides—but many of the additional associations found in traditional lunar calendars are based on centuries of folklore, observation, and agricultural tradition rather than established scientific evidence.

The Farmers’ Almanac preserves these traditions because they have been used and enjoyed by generations of readers.

For many people, following the Best Days Calendar is simply another way to pay closer attention to natural cycles and plan ahead.

Whether you follow every date or just consult it for fun, the calendar provides a connection to a tradition that stretches back generations.

How To Use the Best Days Calendar

HI, I live in Sweden, how does the calendar dates for instance the Moon Phase Calendar differ from the calendar dates in USA? Thanks!

Erika Black

Farmer’s Almanac has been purchased by a new company and will continue – I wrote a long comment here expressing my disappointment and frustration that it was ending. When I searched to see if it was for sale, I found a separate article from January 2026 that it had been purchased! So if you are looking for almanac information, keep digging.

I cannot express how honestly upset I am for the next generation who will not be able to buy a new copy of your almanac! I always knew mine were gold, glad i kept them especially now. I understand these are different times, but I still think your company provides a service that is unparalleled. I wish I could convince you how important you are for our future kiddos who know nothing of farming or stargazing (Cityborn) or other important ‘adulting’ tips! I know @53 I’ve had the blessing of using your books for many years, my grandma gave me my first copy when I was very young.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Robin Okerlund

What do you mean by mow to shorten growth, etc., we gave snow on the ground, you can’t mow anything

Farmers' Almanac

Hi Robin, You may be surprised to hear that many of our readers are located in areas where it is not snowing yet (or doesn’t snow at all). If you let us know where you are, we would be happy to suggest some activities specifically for your location. Best wishes from all of us at FA.

Teresa

There used to be a category of good days to buy clothes, and I’d often go clothes shopping on those days. I don’t see those days anymore. Is there a reason why and is there a way to figure out those days on my own?
Thank you!

Jamie Hancock

Hello
I am wondering if anyone here cuts their hair for growth according to the dates listed? If so, did you notice thicker hair or faster hair growth? Does this really make any difference? Thanks.

Sharon

Yes I do and it does grow back faster

Nancy Aswege

Yes I do and yes it definitely does!!!

Jamie Hancock

Do you mean faster growth or thicker?

Teresa

When I keep my hair short, I would get it cut on the days to slow growth.
Now that I’m growing it out (and haven’t had it cut again), it is growing out slowly, but seems to be growing out thicker.

Farmers' Almanac

Hi Teresa, Thanks for sharing with your community here. If you are growing your hair out now, you may want to consider getting a little trim on the Best Days to cut hair for growth. But then again, you may be pleased with the results you are seeing already. Please stay in touch. Best wishes from FA! 🧡

God

I do. Cannot really say

Carol Tibbs

It really does make a difference; I’ve been cutting and perming my hair by the moon for many years. This year was the first time I bought this Almanac sorry to see it go.

Cherie

faster Hair growth! Also, shave your legs on the days it says to cut hair to slow growth! especially on the FIRST day of a 3 day, “cut to slow growth” the same if you want your hair to grow!

Linda Ferris

When are the most favorable dates for back surgery in May and June 2025?? Thank you!!

Rebecca

I would go for one of the days that’s good for growth. That may be good for healing too.

Lisa Smith

When are the best days to prune my citrus trees, lightly. I live in southern Ca. Thanks

Farmers' Almanac

Hi Lisa, Generally speaking, we recommend pruning citrus trees in late winter or early spring, after fruit is harvested and before new growth emerges. Here are the Best Days to prune trees: https://www.farmersalmanac.com/best-days/prune-trees. Light pruning is fine throughout the growing season. If you are looking to encourage new growth, prune when the Moon is waxing. However, if your goal is to manage your tree(s) size (to allow for space between trees or to allow for easier harvesting from shorter branches), we would recommend pruning when the Moon is waning. Any other questions? Let us know! Also, we’d love to see pictures of your trees. Upload a picture or two! Best wishes.

I have tried for years to grow a successful garden, with very limited success. I have only a 4×8 area. The only thing I seem to have any success at are snow peas. I’ve tried everything…I’m now 70, and can’t do as much as I used to. Is the farmer’s market the only garden I’ll be able to harvest from?

Sandi Duncan

Gardening can be quite the patience tester! Have you tried growing flowers or herbs? Sometime vegetables can be very hard as they depend on so much including the amount of sun they receive, soil make up, etc. Start small. Have you tried transplants instead of seeds? Good luck!

Terri Holbrook

Pesticides have caused a decline in pollinators, especially honeybees.
