Virgo Zodiac Sign: Dates, Symbol, Constellation, and Myth
Virgo, the Maiden, is the sixth constellation of the Zodiac. Most of her stars are dim, but Virgo's bright blue-white star, Spica, is easy to spot. Read more!

The Sun crosses into the Virgo zodiac sign on August 23 and stays through September 22, sliding the calendar from late summer harvest into the first cool nights of fall. Virgo is the Maiden, an earth sign ruled by Mercury, and her constellation is the largest patch of sky in the zodiac. This guide walks through the Virgo dates, the Astraea myth, the constellation overhead, the traits folklore attaches to people born under the sign, and the honest line between astronomy and astrology.
When Is Virgo Season?
Virgo season runs from August 23 through September 22 each year. The window opens in the heat of late summer and closes within a day of the fall equinox, which is one reason Virgo has always been tied to the harvest. If your birthday lands inside that window, Virgo is your Sun sign. If it lands a day on either side, you sit on a cusp with Leo (late August) or Libra (late September), and folklore says you carry a little of both.
| Period | Approximate dates | What the sky is doing |
|---|---|---|
| Virgo Sun sign | August 23 to September 22 | Sun appears to pass in front of the Virgo constellation |
| Virgo constellation best viewing | April and May, evening sky | Constellation high overhead after sunset for Northern Hemisphere observers |
| Virgo birthstones | August: peridot · September: sapphire | See our August birthstone and September birthstone guides |
The Virgo Symbol: The Maiden
The Virgo glyph is ♍, a curved letter “M” with a looping tail. The “M” gestures at “Maiden” or “Virgin,” and the tail is often read as a sheaf of wheat tucked under her arm. The Latin word virgo simply means “virgin,” carrying the older sense of “young unmarried woman” rather than the narrower modern reading.
In old star charts, Virgo is drawn as a woman in flowing robes holding a single sheaf of wheat. The sheaf marks the position of Spica, her brightest star, whose name is Latin for “ear of grain.” That tie between Virgo and the late-summer harvest is not an accident. For centuries, the Sun appeared to enter Virgo right as the wheat was ready to cut, and the constellation rose at dawn during the harvest weeks.
The Mythology of Virgo
The story most often attached to Virgo is the story of Astraea. In Greek myth, Astraea was the daughter of Zeus and Themis, and she was the goddess of justice and innocence. She lived among humans during the Golden Age, when, the old poets said, no one lied, no one stole, and no one needed to plant because the earth gave food freely.
When the Golden Age ended and people grew cruel and dishonest, the other immortals retreated to the heavens. Astraea stayed on Earth the longest, hoping people would turn back. When even she could not bear what she saw, she rose into the sky and became the constellation Virgo. The scales she had carried in her hand became the constellation Libra, set just to her east. That is why, in old illustrations, Virgo and Libra are often drawn side by side: a woman and the scales she once held.
Other identifications
Virgo has been identified with more than one figure across cultures. The most common alternatives:
- Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest, mother of Persephone, often shown holding a sheaf of wheat.
- Persephone, Demeter’s daughter, whose six months on Earth and six months in the underworld were the old explanation for the growing season and winter.
- Shala, the Babylonian goddess of war and grain, whose star figure the Greeks may have inherited.
- Isis, the Egyptian mother goddess, who in some traditions was identified with Virgo and with the bright star Spica.
- The Virgin Mary, in Medieval Christian astronomy, often paired with the constellation because of the long association between Virgo and a chaste maiden.
One figure, many names. The pattern across all of them is the same: a woman tied to harvest, justice, or motherhood, watching over the season when the fields come in.
Virgo Personality Traits (a Folklore Note)
Proponents of astrological determinism, which is the belief that the date of your birth shapes your character, say Virgo Sun signs share a recognizable temperament. The traits most often attached to Virgo:
- Analytical and quick to spot patterns
- Practical, with a preference for what works over what is showy
- Detail-oriented, sometimes to the point of perfectionism
- Organized, with a place for everything
- Helpful and quietly reliable
- Modest, often uncomfortable with praise
- Charming in small groups rather than crowds
- Gentle, with a strong sense of duty to family and work
An honest caveat: there is no scientific evidence that the position of the Sun on your birthday shapes your personality. Multiple controlled studies have failed to find a link between Sun sign and measurable traits. People enjoy the framing because it offers a vocabulary for talking about themselves, not because the stars are pulling on their character. Treat the list above as folklore worth knowing, not a verdict on who you are.
Virgo Constellation

Virgo is the largest of the 12 zodiac constellations and the second-largest of all 88 constellations in the sky, after Hydra. It sits between Leo to the west and Libra to the east. Other nearby constellations include Crater, Corvus, Hydra, and Boötes. An old bit of stargazer poetry tells you how to find Boötes and Virgo on a spring night by following the curve of the Big Dipper’s handle: “Follow the arc to Arcturus, and speed on to Spica.” Arcturus is the brightest star in Boötes; Spica is the brightest star in Virgo.
The constellation itself is built around Spica and four outer bright stars: Zavijava (Beta Virginis), Porrima (Gamma Virginis), Auva (Delta Virginis), and Vindemiatrix (Epsilon Virginis), with several fainter stars between them. The traditional rendering is a curved line with two other bent lines rising up from it, said to represent a woman carrying two large sheaves of wheat.
Spica, the ear of wheat
Spica is a blue-white star roughly 250 light years from Earth and one of the 20 brightest stars in the night sky, with an apparent magnitude of 0.98. The name is Latin for “ear of grain,” a direct pointer to the sheaf Virgo carries in old illustrations. Spica is actually a close binary system: two large stars in a tight orbit that cannot be separated by the naked eye. Together they make the single bright point you see in late spring.
The Virgo Cluster of galaxies
Virgo is notable for containing several bright galaxies, including M49, M58, M59, M60, M61, M84, M86, M87, M89, and M90. These were catalogued by French astronomer Charles Messier in the 18th century. There are so many galaxies inside and around the constellation that astronomers refer to them collectively as the Virgo Cluster, a gathering of more than 1,000 galaxies about 54 million light years away. It is the nearest large galaxy cluster to our own Local Group.
The cluster’s brightest member is M87, a giant elliptical galaxy with a supermassive black hole at its center. In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope team published the first direct image ever taken of a black hole’s shadow, the one at the heart of M87. The image, a glowing orange ring around a black void, was assembled from data gathered by a network of eight radio observatories spread across the planet. You can see the original image release at NASA Science. When you look at Virgo on a spring evening, you are looking, very loosely, in the direction of that black hole.
Virgo Compatibility
In traditional Western astrology, signs are grouped by element and quality, and those groupings drive the old compatibility rules. Virgo is earth and mutable. The pairings folklore considers most natural for Virgo:
- Other earth signs: Taurus and Capricorn, who share Virgo’s practical, slow-and-steady streak.
- Water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces, who balance Virgo’s analytic side with emotional depth.
- Trickier matches: Sagittarius and Gemini, where the mutable energy can pull in opposite directions.
The same caveat applies: compatibility charts are folklore, not a forecast. They are useful as a conversation starter and harmless as a planning tool. They are not a substitute for paying attention to the actual person in front of you.
Virgo Birthstones
Because Virgo straddles two calendar months, the sign has two traditional birthstones.
- August (August 23 to August 31): Peridot, a yellow-green stone formed deep in the Earth’s mantle and brought to the surface by volcanic activity. Read more in our August birthstone guide.
- September (September 1 to September 22): Sapphire, most often blue but available in nearly every color except red. See our September birthstone guide for the full color range and folklore.
If you want a single stone that covers the entire Virgo window, jewelers usually point to peridot, since it is the more strongly Virgo-coded of the two in modern birthstone lists.
Famous People Born Under Virgo
A handful of well-known names whose birthdays fall in the Virgo window:
- Mother Teresa (August 26)
- Beyoncé (September 4)
- Stephen King (September 21)
- Keanu Reeves (September 2)
- Michael Jackson (August 29)
- Agatha Christie (September 15)
- Adam Sandler (September 9)
- Bernie Sanders (September 8)
The usual caveat applies. A Virgo birthday is something these people share. A personality is not.
Astronomy vs. Astrology
It is worth keeping the two ideas separate.
- Astronomy is the science of stars, planets, galaxies, and the physical universe. Virgo is a real constellation; Spica is a real binary star; the Virgo Cluster is a real gravitational structure 54 million light years away. All of that is measurable.
- Astrology is the much older tradition of reading character and timing from the apparent positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets against the zodiac. It is folklore with a long pedigree and a working vocabulary, but it is not a science.
At the Farmers’ Almanac we use the zodiac the way our readers have used it for two centuries: as a planning calendar tied to the Moon, the seasons, and the sky overhead. Best Days, Gardening by the Moon, and zodiac sign rulerships are practical tools for picking when to do something, not a way to forecast your love life. For more on the split, see our piece on Astronomy vs. Astrology.
Virgo FAQ
What are the Virgo zodiac sign dates?
The Sun is in Virgo from August 23 through September 22 each year. People born during that window have Virgo as their Sun sign. Birthdays on either edge sit on a cusp with Leo (late August) or Libra (late September).
What does the Virgo symbol mean?
The Virgo glyph is ♍, often read as a stylized “M” for Maiden or Virgin, with a looping tail interpreted as a sheaf of wheat. The Latin word virgo means “virgin” in the older sense of “young unmarried woman.”
Who is the Virgo goddess?
Most often Astraea, the Greek goddess of justice and innocence, who stayed on Earth the longest at the end of the Golden Age before rising into the sky as the constellation Virgo. The figure is also identified with Demeter, Persephone, the Babylonian Shala, the Egyptian Isis, and, in Medieval Christian astronomy, the Virgin Mary.
What is the brightest star in Virgo?
Spica, a blue-white binary star roughly 250 light years away with an apparent magnitude of 0.98. The name is Latin for “ear of grain,” a direct pointer to the sheaf of wheat the Maiden carries in old star charts.
How big is the Virgo constellation?
Virgo is the largest of the 12 zodiac constellations by sky area and the second-largest of all 88 modern constellations, after Hydra. It covers a long band of sky between Leo and Libra, best viewed on spring evenings in the Northern Hemisphere.
What are Virgo birthstones?
Peridot for August birthdays (Aug 23 to Aug 31) and sapphire for September birthdays (Sep 1 to Sep 22). Peridot is the more strongly Virgo-coded of the two in modern lists, but either is correct depending on the birth date.
What planet rules Virgo?
Mercury, the same planet that rules Gemini. In folklore, Mercury’s rulership is what gives Virgo its sharp eye for detail, quick analytical mind, and love of clear systems.
Is astrology real?
Astronomy is a science. Astrology is folklore. There is no controlled-study evidence that the position of the Sun on your birthday shapes your character or predicts your week. We treat the zodiac as a planning vocabulary and a piece of cultural heritage, not as a forecasting tool.

I agree with paris918, we are the Holy Grail of the zodiac. And we do think steady on like a processor and we are very kind and gentle but do tend to speak the truth harshly for truth is all we know.
I’m a Virgo also & I’m surprised at a few things but not all & I agree with it,cuz it fits me like a glove, very nice thank u
I love being a virgo !!
We are ..
-The only astrological sign represented by a female.
-The holy grail of the zodiac.
– our minds think just like a computer processes
– harsh with words only because we strive for PERFECTION and believe PERFECTION EXISTS
Zodiac Zone – how interesting. It’s nice to have a different take on the signs. Looking forward to reading all about the others. By the way, I have a Virgo BFF, she drives me crazy sometimes with those character traits but I love her just the same.
I too enjoyed this. I know that most Virgos are very organize, and neat people. That’s find and dandy; but the only problem is that they EXPECT everyone else to be so too:) Looking forward to reading all of them, especially Taurus!!!
Nice, I am a Virgo and it was nice to read about it. Its not what I expected when I visited the farmers almanacs website. Thanks!
