Hunter’s Moon Horoscopes — October 2023

As we venture further into the shorter days and chilly nights of autumn, we have quite a feast for the eyes when we look to the sky this month. This is because October 2023 will bring spectacular meteor showers and two major cosmic events: a solar eclipse on October 14 followed by a lunar eclipse with the Full Hunter’s Moon on October 28. As we inch toward Halloween, you may feel particularly spooky with the arrival of this celestial display! A General Note About Lunar Eclipses and Astrology

Lunar eclipses always fall on a full Moon—but are much more intense, dramatic, and shocking than a supermoon. While a supermoon is closer to the Earth, a lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth’s shadow falls over the Moon’s surface.

There are usually two to three lunar eclipses each year, always falling close to a solar eclipse. Depending on the nodes of the Moon, which dance through a zodiac sign axis for about eighteen months at a time, we will experience eclipses in that polarity of signs. (For example, Taurus-Scorpio.)

Most often when we think of a lunar eclipse, we think of a gorgeous—or frightening—”Blood Moon” where the Moon’s surface becomes bright yellow, brown, or even red. Ironically, although “Blood Moon” is an alternative name of the full Moon in October, October’s lunar eclipse will not glow red because the Moon will just barely fall into the shadow—or umbra—of the Earth.

Astrologically, lunar eclipses are believed to be three times more emotional, intense, and powerful than full Moons. While a normal full Moon can still bring endings or culminations, lunar eclipses often trigger major milestones or life changes that we remember forever. They ramp up the power of a full Moon to full speed and can trigger crisis events that expose deep secrets, fears, or news. On a positive note, they can mark meaningful breakthroughs or victories, but on a more somber note, they can create dramatic breakdowns or separations.

Lunar eclipses often reveal their biggest news on the day that they occur but can still deliver revelations not only the week that surrounds them but also an entire month before or after! This is why we call it “eclipse season.” 

The Astrology of the October 2023 Lunar Eclipse and Full Hunter’s Moon

Beware: You may feel especially stimulated, triggered, drained, or hyper-emotional during the weeks surrounding this Hunter’s Moon.

This year’s Full Hunter’s Moon occurs on October 28, 2023 at 4:24 PM Eastern at 5 degrees of Taurus. (Each sign of the zodiac is made up of 30 degrees, so 6 degrees would mean that the full Moon will be positioned approximately 1/6 of the length of Taurus—closer to Aries than Gemini on the wheel. The axis of Taurus-Scorpio is especially powerful, as it balances an earth sign with a water sign. This duality engages with worth, values, money, romance, trust, and power. On one end, Taurus encourages us to embrace our physical world and abundance, bringing a greater focus to our resources and wealth. Scorpio, on the other side, is more mystical and ethereal, as it forces us to embrace and understand our shadow sides.

This is the final eclipse on the Taurus-Scorpio axis until the 2030s. We began eclipses on this axis in November 2021, which means that the themes, stories, journeys, and situations that began to arise then should reach culmination within the weeks surrounding this Hunter’s Moon. Also, look back toward May 19, 2023, which was a new Moon in Taurus and you will see similar situations, conversations, and themes.

The Hunter’s Moon takes place in Taurus (5 degrees)—so look to see where this falls in your natal chart and you’ll have even more insight on what may pop up in your path! 

As for watching and witnessing the eclipse, it won’t entirely be seen in North America, as it falls over Africa, Europe, and Australia more significantly. The penumbral eclipse begins at 2:01 PM Eastern. The partial eclipse begins at 3:35 PM Eastern. The maximum eclipse takes place at 4:15 PM Eastern. The partial eclipse ends at 4:52 PM Eastern. The penumbral eclipse ends at 6:26 PM Eastern. 

When breaking down the cosmic energy that will further echo at this time, we look to the astrological aspects—or “conversations”—the planets are having now. They will color the energy in our lives. First, the eclipse is opposite Mercury and Mars, which will bring up a deep need to communicate our emotions and desires and connect with others. 

The eclipse is also perfectly united with the planet of luck, Jupiter, which will spill joy, optimism, and miracles onto our lives. This could be a major time for favor, recognition, happy endings, wealth, or a big break.
